I may get some flak for saying this, but one of Eddie's top vocal performances ever is easily The Waiting when he took the stage in Denver with Tom Petty in 2006. Chills every damn time I listen to it.

People have to realize nearly every singers voice changes inevitably over time. I think Ed had to adjust over time, with some hiccups circa 2000, but I honestly think he has done well with his new vocal style over the past 3 records. The man can still sing the shit outta ballads too.


Singers like John Lennon exhibit the same vocal maturation.

I've never even heard the original version, only the 7 Worlds Collide version. And it's so lovely, so perfect, that duet, that I just never bothered looking for the original.

Agreed. My absolute favorite is Sleepless Nights with Beck. Their voices sound so good together. I'd love for them to do a striped down, duets cover album together. Preferably full of oldies.

The original (with Tim Finn on vocals) is SUPER theatrical and kinda suffers from production. There's an amazing version from an album called EnzSO (which was the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra doing Split Enz tunes) that has Neil Finn doing vocals. I still tend to go to the Ed version 9 times out of 10 though (and I say that as someone who had both other versions before Seven Worlds Collide came out). The Neil/EnzSo version is lush and beautiful, but Ed captures the frustration in the song much better than Neil does.

I'd never heard that song before. Didn't really like it, but I think it's mostly because I found Ed's voice really off-putting. I'm listening to the other one that Lament posted and it's so much better.
