10th album rumors and speculation

I have a vision for what I think it sounds and looks like, based on those titles and the compromise I hope they've reached between what they want and what I want. I wonder how close I'll be.

I haven't been able to figure out how to say what i wanna say about Backspacer and what i want the new album to be, and i still don't know if this is it, but i really want the songs to be more meaningful. I think i feel like Backspacer is mostly a fun album, even though there is some deep stuff in there, it just doesn't feel the same as the other pj albums, and i really like Backspacer.

There is a slightly awkward clash between fun / silly and profound / serious. I kind of like my PJ to take themselves seriously, for the most part. I was never one of the people who got bored of their politics, for example. I say bring it back if that's what makes them fired up and interesting. We might never get it back wholesale, but I do hope that we don't have anything silly spoiling an otherwise good album. Or if we do have anything silly (I'm not against silly), I want it to be actually funny. It's got to work. Johnny Guitar, for me, was a song which had a fun sense of humour and it worked. It was funny and whimsical. Supersonic, not so much.

They have a decent amount of fun songs through out their career, but not a whole album. I really think they do need something political that they don't agree with to motivate them.

That's a good observation. I'm on board with that.

I think in general I appreciate songs that address the darker shades of life/psyche more so than upbeat and silly songs. I don't think one set is better or worse than the other but I'd rather connect my demons/struggles with a song or singer.

I've never thought of Vitalogy as having "silly" songs. I think the lighter moments are meant to be more deliberately strange than funny.

That's a funny binary you've set up there. I didn't know things that were strange could not also be funny. But it does depend on what you see as 'funny'. I've never belly laughed to Vitalogy but it's loaded with wit, and plenty of songs make me smirk at various points. 'Funny' doesn't necessarily = 'light' or slapstick.

Just three examples off the top of my head: 'I've never sucked Satan's dick', 'role model, roll models in blood'... and the entirety of Spin The Black Circle. That song contains the funniest extended metaphor of their career, imo.

Actually no, five examples: because Bugs makes me laugh, all these years later. And Foxymop is conceptually very funny. Albeit in a very dark and twisted way. A lot of that album is 'Grunge' starting to consciously take the piss out of itself.

It's a little menacing. It is angrier and darker, thematically, than a lot of PJ before and after it. It is also a good rock album with some overly self conscious attempts to make it a 'challenging' listen. I agree. But here's the thing. I think that some of the 'overly self-conscious' darkness is deliberate, ironic and self-deprecating... what I am calling 'funny' for the sake of argument.

Quite a few people choose Crash Into Me by DMB for their wedding, if not their wedding song; always a smirk.

I can't think of or hear Every Breath You Take without thinking of Cat's Eye.
