I'm a Zappa fan, sir. I guess what I'm saying is, I've never been inclined to giggle at "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow." There's more than enough musicality there to make it 'not funny' for me. Maybe I'm a joyless prick? Whatever. It's saved me from buying/listening to Weird Al records.evenslow wrote:Yeah humor in music is wildly overrated. Warren Zevon and Elvis Costello are about the only guys I can think of to consistently pull it off. Mostly b/c it's dripping with sarcasm.

I think you're unfairly relegating humour into the 'fucking stupid and meaningless slapstick' pile too easily. Since when did 'musicality' destroy humour? You don't need a belly laugh to have 'humour'. Do you laugh at anything? Sarcastic wit, 'black' / dark comedy? Anything?Self wrote:I'm a Zappa fan, sir. I laugh a shit ton, actually. Sarcastic wit, 'black' / dark comedy are probably my favorites. But I don't want/look for it in my musical choices. Take your example of Satan's Bed. I find the subject matter kinda serious. "I'll never suck Satan's dick" has never struck me as funny, or humor. Same with Bugs and foxy. I freely admit it might make me a joyless prick. But, I'm not about to apologize for it.harmless wrote:I think you're unfairly relegating humour into the 'fucking stupid and meaningless slapstick' pile too easily. I also find AC/DC's Big Balls to be one of the dumbest songs ever recorded. But, I laughed at Four Weddings And Funeral. I'm really far from perfect.

I know. I just hate to call it humor if it doesn't make me laugh.theplatypus wrote:Humor is not the same as jokes, Justin. You know that.Self wrote:I'm a Zappa fan, sir. You know things are bad when you see a pic of Ed with a new haircut and think maybe this album does have a chance to be good.
