So apparently The Conjuring is getting some good reviews. I scoffed at it when I saw the trailer of course, but I guess we'll see.

I've been really looking forward to this coming out. I thought that the trailer showed potential

And the purists are foaming at the mouth.

I still haven't seen the original.

Doesn't look great. The original is sublime.

Looking forward to The Bling Ring. I'm a big Sofia fan.

I have slight reservations, but I definitely want to see it. I'm also a Sofia fan. Hopefully, it's a worthy companion.

I really hate Sofia Coppola's movies, but I'll watch the Bling Ring because whatever.

She makes really stylish movies that have beautiful cinematography and great music but communicate nothing, leave me feeling empty, grasping at the air where those themes and ideas and emotions would be. It's like she watched so many nouvelle vague-era films but took away all the wrong things from them. "Hate" is a strong word and I shouldn't have used it, it's more like a strong exasperation with how great her movies could be-- but they do say "judge the movie you saw, not the movie you wanted to see", and in that regard I find her work vapid and insipid... for the most part. I like a lot of things about "Lost in Translation", actually.

Obviously, I disagree. But I can see where you're coming from. Were I more versed in nouvell vague, perhaps I'd be able to defend my position better. Perhaps I like her more because I'm not as exposed in so many other film styles/genres.

But I really don't understand what's vapid about saying "judge the movie you saw, not the movie you wanted to see."

No no, sorry I wasn't clear. "Judge the movie you saw, not the movie you wanted to see" is something they tell you in film journalism. What I meant was I was getting myself lost thinking about all the things I thought these movies could be, instead of solely on what's on the screen. If I disregard my expectations and stop grasping at things that aren't there, I still think they're pretty weak.

I see. That makes much more sense.

What are some films that you'd recommend that you think perhaps inspired what she's doing, but do it much better? I'd be interested in checking some out if you ever find time to drop me a few titles.

It doesn't look like it has enough white people in it, but I suppose I'll add it to the list.
