Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
People I trust are speculating that this is all about improving Edwards' already strong film. They think it's a strong movie but maybe a tad too dark. And that Gilroy is there to pad some of Edwards' weaknesses, specifically fleshing out character and making sure the tone is more even. Which to me means, making it "feel more Star Wars." But that's so weird. What has Edwards or Gilroy ever done that makes you think, 'yeah that fucker gets Star Wars! When we make a new movie we should hire one of those guys because they instinctively understand that "Star Wars Tone."'?
I don't know. I guess I'm just frustrated hearing so many people say "as long as it feels like Star Wars."

Right!
I haven't seen Godzilla, but I keep going back to reports that Gilroy also helped Edwards on that film. And people seem to really like how that turned out.

Go the other way DCT.
I've had zero to low expectations about this. So it can only be a win. I win of its terrible and get to complain for a year afterwards in the run up to 8 about how it's ruined the Star Wars name. Or a win if it's good.
I DO wonder how it's success as a standalone will bear on 8. Both the final cut of 8 and the brand.

I worry about this. I don't want a BvS affect here. Even if R1 doesn't deliver, please don't fuck with Ep 8. Let Rian do his thing. PLEASE.dimejinky99 wrote:Go the other way DCT.

Here's why I think R1 is actually in trouble. No marketing for it and the couple of opportunities they have had they screwed up and the reshoot story is all anyone's talking about.
5 months out and they haven't even started. They have a huge mountain to climb.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
I understand that, at the end of the day, if you're working within the studio system, that movies are a business. To those with the money, they are a business first. But there's room for art, too. And I think these fuckers would be surprised how much money they could make if they'd get out of the way and trust the artists they hire to do their job.
And if you don't want what that artist brings to the table, don't hire that artist. How about that? Don't want your Star Wars movie to be long and trippy and scary and bizarre and full of bugs and rabbit-people, maybe don't hire David Lynch to direct it. Dicks.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
The lack of a trailer is troublesome, I agree. I'm not going to pretend that isn't weird. It's a bad sign. And, yeah, the reshoot drama has taken control of the narrative. I hate that. It totally sucks. We should be thrilled right now and brimming with anticipation.dimejinky99 wrote:Here's why I think R1 is actually in trouble. Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
The usual pure lockdown cos it's Star Wars has worked against them here.
They can't get in front of the story. The only comeback they had to the reshoot story was a weak feature on the characters in EW.
So what do they do? Instead of using their big shop window of celebration to get it back onside, they drop the ball and show a making of bit.
Stupid move. So stupid.
Having trouble believing there's not full panic in the editing booth and at lucasfilm.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
I have a strong feeling that when the dust settles -- 10, 20 years from now -- and we get a better picture of what really happened with this movie, it will all come down to "MOAR VADER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
And that's just a fucking shame.

I wasn't a particularly big fan of Godzilla (it was...fine, I guess). But the characters were utterly flat and uninteresting, so someone coming in to help this guy with character stuff is fine with me.

Dime, star wars doesn't require much lead time to market now that the movies have been reintroduced, and you can market a film with trailers and what have you LONG before your final product is finished. Whatever doubts or worries people may have, the trailer point should not be one of them.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Yeah, that's the general sentiment I'm hearing from everyone. I'm sure all of this is just unnecessary panic. Disney clearly knows how to make money and appeal to wide audiences. They tend to know what they're doing. And TPTB keep reiterating that "it's a war film" "it's a war film" "it's a war film." Hopefully all of this is just trying to make the best possible version of Edwards' film and not the Suicide Squad test audience debacle.stip wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:People I trust are speculating that this is all about improving Edwards' already strong film. I mean, I hear you. But it's fucking weird, man. We're only four months away from release and there hasn't been a trailer yet. That's.... unique, to say the least.stip wrote:dimejinky99 wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:I worry about this. I don't want a BvS affect here. Even if R1 doesn't deliver, please don't fuck with Ep 8. Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
I am pretty confident that Disney has done enough market research to know precisely when peak times are to release trailers. 4 months is a ton of time for the second trailer. There's no need to raise brand awareness right now (we had to be sold on the idea of suicide squad, for instance, or the idea that BvS was the official launching of the DC cinematic universe), and if we were up to our eyeballs in Rogue One stuff we'd either be bored with it by the end or they'd be forced to keep releasing new footage to keep interest up.

so the best part about Godzilla to you was the human relationships?LoathedVermin72 wrote:goddammit stipstip wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:People I trust are speculating that this is all about improving Edwards' already strong film. I loved all of Godzilla. The human relationships are the crux of the movie thematically. My feelings on this are well-documented.stip wrote:so the best part about Godzilla to you was the human relationships?LoathedVermin72 wrote:goddammit stipstip wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:People I trust are speculating that this is all about improving Edwards' already strong film.
