Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
He messed up way too many times for my liking on Friday. Talk about mailing it in.
Reminds me of a Kim Thayil interview from years ago. He was talking about being at a Guitar Center, and about how he could probably walk into any Guitar Center location and find a teenager there who could play circles around him. But the difference between that teenager and himself is the ability to write (good/catchy) original songs and even more importantly to have hooked up with other people (Chris Cornell) who have that unique talent as well.
So the Weezer drummer is lucky to be friends with Rivers Cuomo and god dammit he's gonna ride that train all the way too the last stop. Lucky bastard.

Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
Queensryche are playing this Friday and my wife has been oddly exited about seeing them play. Like, to give you something to compare it to, imagine if Dierks Bently were coming to town and your wife/girlfriend was talking about it and bringing it up at odd times in conversations. Anyway, after two weeks of this we finally figure out what the problem is:
me: Well I know that a lot of people will be excited for the encore when they play their big hit.
her: Which one are you talking about, We Are the Champions?
me: Wait, what song?
her: You know, that one song from all of the football games and stuff.
me: belly laugh ensues.

I often think that honor belongs to "Alexandra Leaving" by Leonard Cohen.

Update to the Queensryche story: Apparently mom-in-law's hubbie thought that they were a Queen cover band. What.

Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
Hey, Trag or other people with recording experience.
Why is it that often during songs where there are pauses or very quiet parts, you can very faintly hear in the background what's about to happen next?
I've noticed it in several songs but just to give you the example of what prompted this question just now. In Jeff Buckley's song "I Want Someone Badly", the song starts and stops several times, and then picks up with Jeff going "now IIIIIIIIIIiiiii..."
During those stops before his vocal part kicks in, you can very faintly hear that vocal part already happening in the background.
I imagine it's headphone bleed-through of a guide take or something, but if that's the case then why is it always something that's about to happen? Would the guide take be out of sync with what's being recorded?
I hope that makes sense. I feel like I'm not explaining it right.

I listened to a lot of heavy metal when I was a kid. A LOT. But I don't get the death/speed metal stuff at all.

I can't get into it when it's generic. Standard "sound" with weak, growled, unintelligible vocals. It seems like a waste of time. Hell, it seems downright conservative and safe and boring. But when death metal bands do something to differentiate themselves - use actual melody, have vocals with actual power and energy - basically, actually write and perform distinct songs - it can be some of my favorite music ever. Septicflesh, Gojira, and Behemoth come to mind as recent examples.E.H. Ruddock wrote:I listened to a lot of heavy metal when I was a kid. A LOT. But I don't get the death/speed metal stuff at all.

For whatever reason today started wondering what ever happened to the re-issue of the singles soundtrack that was rumoured to be happening a while back - did a wee search and it looks like Billy Corgan killed it. Dick!

Make no mistake - I'm a huge metal guy and have been since high school. I'm just picky about it.tragabigzanda wrote:Stoner rock fan here. But I definitely share LV's experience with metal, I've also found it to be very conservative

Good on ya, Billy. Why the hell would there need to be a reissue of the Singles soundtrack? It's still in print and sounds fine.
It's time to stop the madness with all these fucking reissues already. Seriously.

Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
I think it was supposed to be a vinyl-only reissue. It was never released on vinyl in the US, and prices for the original foreign pressings are astronomical.
