I would add "The Road" and "8mm" to that list.

Cannibal Holocaust is pretty bad - some sort of exploitation flick. the parts of it that shocked me aren't the ones that they've intended imo.
i've always been curious about Salo. has anyone here watched it?

I can't say that disturbed me anywhere near as much as the other movies on this list I've seen
Spoiler: show
I couldn't stop thinking about that ending for weeks.

Pasolini seems to be an interresting director (i've only watched the Terrence Stamp movie...uh...Teorema and it curdled my blood with brilliance and eeriness.) so i'm game ot watch this, mostly because its somewhat historical importance i.e. Pasolini's murder.

Fair call - It was pretty bad. When I watched it I didn't have kids, so the impact may have been different

5. Requiem for a Dream (2000)-one of the few movies I wanted to re-watch immediately after finishing it, but it was so distressing I wasn't able to bring myself to do it.
8. Oldboy (2003)-yup
9. Deliverance (1972)-That one scene is so haunting, it still blows my mind how often it is parodied. I guess people have to use humor to deal with how fucked up it is, but idk. I think it demands a little more something (not respect or honor maybe just deference or something)
11. Irreversible (2002)-loved it, but I haven't been able to bring myself to watch another Noe film since. I always say that I'm not in the right mood for it right then. Perhaps I never will be.
20. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008)- has made me cry my friggin eyes out three (3) times, and that doesn't count the times when I just think about certain moments from the movie and my eyeballs start to hurt.
25. Antichrist (2009)- didn't like this one.

Salo, Funny Games, and Cannibal Holocaust are three that I've been interested in for years, but because I know how difficult they will be, I've put them off and put them off.

just watched Oldboy, then Cannibal Holocaust

nice twist on Oldboy, maybe 2 twists? heh

Cannibal Holocaust is a bit hard to see, specially the scene (real scenes actually) with animal killings

I read The Road then watched it while my wife was pregnant. It was a tough road alright but nothing compared to Breaking The Waves. Man, how was that one left out. That and As Good As It Gets. First time I ever walked out on a film.

I guess it depends what you're looking for. I thought Leaving Las Vegas was extremely depressing. Grave of the Fireflies was extremely sad and had tears rolling down my cheeks for its last 20 minutes. I left American Beauty feeling sucker punched; a rolling, biting satire for the most part only to have its main character brutally killed in the last act (I didn't know that going in).
Requiem was confusing & challenging at first (in part because I kept seeing it in pieces on IFC) but immensely watchable. When I finally did see it all the way through I felt like I needed a shower. I did see The Killing Fields, the most disturbing thing about it was that it was mostly true. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days was a gut wrenchingly bleak a film. That one stuck with me for a couple days.
I occasionally get in the mood for this type of movie. I don't mind getting sucked into them, particularly if they're more of a downer of a story than a brutally violent one. I'll have to check some of these out.

I tried to watch Oldboy last night on Netflix. Their only version is dubbed in English. What the fuck is that?
