My friend Geoff on FB:
This is really funny. Just bear with me. It's not quite green M & M's in the dressing room but maybe it's weirder. Yes, we were also offered a Neil Young interview. And yes, one condition was that I had to listen to his new live album on the nutty Pono player he's introduced. I was thrilled to tell the publicist that I actually had a Pono. Not that I was using it much, but... they told me they had to send me another one, as a loaner, because they needed to load up the new album and couldn't do that on my Pono. They told me I needed to listen on balanced headphones - just google what those are and you'll recognize how ridiculous that is - and I was also told the length of the album (98 minutes) and that Neil would ask if I had listened to it on the Pono. I did my job. I brought the Pono on a drive with me. I took 98 minutes out of a workday to give a second listen. The songs sound okay. Neil did decide to overdub the sound of bees and other creatures onto the record. Fine. I guess bees are cool. So I was ready for the chat... And then what? After days of back-and-forth, the publicist told me that Neil decided he didn't have time to chat. I am still waiting for instructions for how to send the Pono back because, as my unofficial motto goes, the only thing more useless than one Pono is two. I guess I should be grateful, considering how this went for Zach Schonfeld.

This was really good. I loved the little bits about the albums he made, and the Mirrorball reference.

went to his Amsterdam show last night. It was my fifth time seeing him, possibly the best one so far. (But I say that every time...). Promise of the Real is a real good band that plays with lots of energy. Neil is like 50 years older but he still levels their enery. He played for 3.5!! hours last night.

Setlist:

After the Gold Rush
Heart of Gold
The Needle and the Damage Done
Razor Love
Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)
Out on the Weekend
Hold Back the Tears
Human Highway
Unknown Legend
Someday
Words (Between the Lines of Age)
Winterlong
Alabama
Love to Burn
Powderfinger
Mansion on the Hill
Change Your Mind
Don't Be Denied
Western Hero
Seed Justice
Revolution Blues
Monsanto Years
Rockin' in the Free World
Love and Only Love

Encore:
Like an Inca
Here We Are in the Years

I am listening to the "Trans" version of "Mr. Soul" right now. "Let's dig up this one old song from 20 years ago, now seems like as good a time as any to re-record a version of it with vocoder harmonies."

This guy is just the best.

why?

Code: Select all

Under Construction

Progress continues to move the PonoMusic store to a new content partner, 7Digital. We are in the midst of doing all of the needed engineering work to enable that.. Once completed, you'll have the ability to purchase our music in the US and Canada again and we will have the ability to begin expansion to other countries. This remains the top priority for the PonoMusic team, and we appreciate your continued support during this transition.

We have updated our FAQs in an effort to answer some of the questions that you may have about this transition.

In the meantime, the PonoMusic Community remains active, so please join in the conversations.

Thank you for your understanding, patience, and support.
The Ponomusic Team.
Plus the units are $399. You could get this from Amazon for $269 and buy a 128GB card for less than the Pono.

Granted you'd have to install MediaGo...but it's better than nothing. And it's flat, not a toblerone bar.

I've considered the Sony but it was my, admittedly patchy, understanding that the tech specs of the Pono Player were better.

I like the Pono much better from a design perspective too.

Hmm, the battery life on the Pono Player is only eight hours or so I've read. That sways me towards the Sony to some degree as I can guarantee I'll frequently forget to plug it in to recharge.

I bought a Sony Walkman 5 years ago. The battery life now is still much better than 8 hours, even though it isn't as good as it used to be. I can get maybe 15 hours out of it; when I bought it I could get maybe 30 hours. It also gets FM radio, which helps during basketball season when I want to listen to Blazer games. The sound is way better than my iPod too.

I'd recommend it.

I have that Sony. I had the same thought as you about getting a Pono and found this one. I last charged it on June 20th and then I was travelling for a month but left it home for the duration. Since then I've just been too busy to sit and listen to music. With that in mind...it still shows full charge, I just checked.

The noise cancelling headphones it comes with are great as well, though I do wonder if I lose some high-end because of it. I listen to something like Metallica or Pearl Jam and notice that there are parts I feel like I'm missing. I mean, I've listened to these albums hundreds of times over the years and I know what I'm supposed to be hearing. Granted it could also be that I've only had it a couple months and haven't had a chance to really get into the settings to see what I can and can't do about it.
