It made huge numbers on Friday, but had a big drop off on Saturday. It looks like it will trend similar to BvS.Rangi Guy wrote:So - despite the critics tearing this apart, from what I've read, this is making serious bank!

$135 million opening weekend. Fucking baller. Like Burt said, now we have to see if it has any legs at all or if it's BvS all over again.

It had great marketing, but jesus the word of mouth is terrible.
Not much competition left though.

Yeah, it'll be really interesting to see what happens. I know a lot of people that seem to like this more than they liked BvS.

Re: Suicide Squad (DC Movie)
Define failure.
WB expected it to hit the 1 Billion mark. It fell short of that. It dropped something like 63% in grosses from week one to week two. And kept plummeting. By most accounts, yes, it was a failure.

Do you think Ben Affleck thinks it was a failure?

Re: Suicide Squad (DC Movie)
I loved BvS.
Its way more interesting and challenging that, lets say, Civil War or Iron Man 2.
Im going to see SS this week, but can it be worst than, lets say, Ant Man? Is it possible that SS can be more mediocre than Thor 1 and 2?

Re: Suicide Squad (DC Movie)
BVS was hardly challenging. There was a challenging story that they were attempting to tell, but the ham fisted execution did not do it justice. The result was something akin to the experience of being sober listening to your drunk friend impress himself with how deep hs insights were. Zach Snyder's partners take on why BVS didn't land with audiences was that people don't like their heroes deconstructed. That's not the problem. The problem is that people don't like it when you do it poorly
The only super hero movies to actually be challenging and have intelligent intellectual things to say have been Nolan's batman movies. The rest of these live and die on spectacle, heart, humor, endearing characters and interesting relationships - and it is just as hard to consistently do that well as it is to make a movie about big ideas.

Re: Suicide Squad (DC Movie)
I dont agree. Pretty much every frame of BvS was more cinematic and interesting than anything Marvel did. The story of BvS was bloated yes, and Snyder is not a good storyteller yes, but the scope of the movie was challenging. They might not have succeeded, but they still made a compelling movie everyone was ready to hate for some reason...and i kinda feel the same with SS now that the reviews are coming out.stip wrote:BVS was hardly challenging. Is weird because i feel DC is making the right approach, a very cinematic and different one from what Marvel did years ago, but for some reason everyone is expecting to hate whatever they do.
Aw thanks man. Yeah, me too..i loved that first trailer, and im actually a big fan of the original comics. Not the new ones though.stip wrote:Though I'm glad you liked it VG, and I hope you like suicide squad

Re: Suicide Squad (DC Movie)
Suicide squad's marketing generated an insane amount of goodwill, VG. I think the critical shellacking took everyone by surprise. Look no further than LV.
Snyder is an impressive visual stylist, though the speed ramping is now at the point of self-parody. But it's a visual choice, and only one part of cinematic storytelling. Other choices work well for the context of a particular moment, and other directors do a much better job establishing motivations and creating the emotional investment that us equally, if not more, important a part of the experience. It's why a frequent (and legitimate, I think) critique of Snyder is that he films individual shots that fail to cohere together as a whole

Re: Suicide Squad (DC Movie)
People were certainly not ready to hate on SS. That thing had more positive buzz than any recent movie I can think of (outside of Disney).
I don't see anything new or interesting about the cinematic quality of BvS. It's nothing new, in fact it's positively dated. The dark and gritty take has been around longer than the Marvel movies. Marvel movies were a reaction to this in the first place.
And the storytelling and execution were abysmal. It was trying so hard to look important, but was completely airheaded. Not to mention it just wasn't entertaining in the least. Did anyone enjoy the last third of that movie? Were you invested in anything or anyone in this movie?
