As someone who never watches any of these movies, the impression I had of this film was that it was almost uniformly expected to be embarassing and terrible. Just relentlessly negative press and internet chatter.

That was not my experience. I saw a lot of positive expectation for this. Certainly not uniformly. But there were a lot of people who had high expectations. And I think, based on the trailers, it looks fucking great.

I'm super bummed that people aren't loving. I'll still see it but I'm not making it a priority anymore.

I thought the Doomsday fight was better than a lot of other CBM "Boss Fights.," it didn't feel shoe-horned in and was sufficiently threatening, and came about in an interesting and unique way. It's been a while since I've watched most MCU movies, but I especially remember Iron Man's fight against Obadiah Stane being pretty lame. The Avenger's versus Loki was really The Avenger's versus a bunch of Chitauri, which was quite underwhelming, Loki could've been great, but instead was a wimp. Captain America and Red Skull fought for like a minute and a half. Ant-Man fought an evil Ant-Man. I love the MCU movies, but how many times is Iron Man going to fight villains in wannabe Iron Man armor?

Your last sentence is spot on. Annoying.

fair enough, but the superman and wonderwoman vs doomsday is the exact same problem. so was the batman v superman fight, to an extent. strong and indestructible people who punch fighting each other. hardly the antidote for the evil opposite thing. the most interesting part of doomsday was watching batman get out of the way (like when black widow fled the hulk).

one of the things that made the airport fight in civil war so great was that you had a diverse set of powers fighting each other

i was thinking about this some more. the MCU complaint about evil opposite villians is fair, but they are smart in that there is usually some other element to the fight. ironman I is another suit, but it overpowers tony. he has to outsmart it. IM 2 was a robot horde, but it was the first time we saw that. IM 3 had the switching suits element. Thor and Loki were never spectacular fights, but they should not have been. loki is a manipulator - the larger machinations that lead to it are whats important (its why we dont think of the fist fight w the joker as the climax of dark knight). Thor 2 had that fun teleportation gimmick to mix things up. Guardians put the team against a guy they had to trick to beat, since they couldnt otherwise hurt him. ant man was an opposite fight but it played with the fun shrinking gimmick. Avengers 1 and 2 were faceless hordes (which meant the fight itself was never that much in doubt) but staged in really fun and inventive ways, and in both cases the fight against the horde was the distraction from the larger goal.

the cap movies are brawls, but theyre really well done, and i presume we arent going to be critiquing two bad ass people in a fist fight, since thats every action movie but aliens, terminator, and predator (which are action/horror)

what did BvS have going for it? the same fight as movie 1 with the addition of more people doing the same thing with no emotional stakes to make you care. plus Doomsday is literally the same evil opposite from the first movie. its not even a different guy! the presence of batman could have made it more interesting, but instead he got a sidequest

i liked BvS. i think the biggest problem is story telling for them. they seem to skip parts that make the story seem senseless or illogical.

it would have taken 5-10 minutes to show bruce using facial recognition software to track down who diana prince is and to get her email address. instead they just show her getting an email from him.

they show lex cutting off the layer zods fingers. how did he know to do this? what if the kryptonian ship worked on iris scans? show that he gets stopped in the ship and cant go further without finger prints.

how does lex and bruce even know that kryptonite can weaken superman?

while these little pieces of assumed information dont hurt the overall story i think they (along with others) could have had the story flow better.

with the marvel stories they let your assume the trivial portions, not major/sub major plot points

Me too, friend. And I'm assuming Snyder is directing but I actually didn't see confirmation on that.
