I'm really anticipating not liking the piano. I don't think Brendan O'Brien played the piano with any style or finesse on Backspacer.

I'm trying to think of epic piano-based music a la Born to Run.

I would do anything to love this album... but I won't do that.

What if it was just listening to Brendan's advice on how to achieve their goal ('pop' / 'new wave' or whatever)? What if he's just really good at doing what he feels is called for from record to record? What if, given a new aim for this record, Brendan does just fine and we get a nicely produced rock album?

Well there we are. If I'm honest, I think Backspacer, like it or hate it, had a unified sound that I think would've been deliberately off the wall and different.

I actually misread the point he was making, because I am a lazy reader. Still, it was a good post, just ignore the context (same as I did). Incidentally I agree that Matt has a problem with speeding songs up, but yeah, it's just as often Ed. He's one of those guitarists with very little regard for tempo.

I doubt that. Mostly because whatever was done on Backspacer wasn't done particularly well. Especially the songs that feature busier arrangements. They ruined Speed of sound by completely changing the mood of the demo and it's not like they can't build a decent arrangement layered or not. It seems that for some reason they don't seem to care enough.

Then that's awesome. But however they were working with him on vs-yeild produced results better than backspacer. I just remembered reading that eddie wanted just breathe to be a little sparse song and brenden said 'NO we are going to make the most beautiful song EVAH' and added strings and whatever . I think i would have prefered the former but i don't think he killed the song or anything, hell it's probably their most successful song this decade so he was probably right and i should shutup.

I get what you're saying though, maybe if the band came to him with binaural first he'd have got them to do thier Spaciest song EVAH.

I forgot about the abomination that is speed of sound. Yeah that song they did kill. Was that brenden or did eddie vomit cheese and lasers all over it himself?

I wouldn't mind a more fleshed out version of Without You, Sleeping By Myself, or Light Today but not on an album. Could be a cool b-side or something.

play the uke songs can't keep and then riot act's can't keep. If you can improve a song that much with a full band version I'm on board.

Agreed that there is improvement, but I don't really enjoy either version of Can't Keep.
