Re: 10th album rumors and speculation
That's a subjective judgment and has no bearing on how successful the band feels their attempt to emulate 'New Wave' was. Whether or not you find the album good or not, the fact is it sounded wildly different, production-wise, to anything PJ has done before. And there's a fair chance that that's because they understand the sounds of 'New Wave' to be pretty different to the sounds usually associated with PJ.Mine wrote:I doubt that. Mostly because whatever was done on Backspacer wasn't done particularly well. Especially the songs that feature busier arrangements. They ruined Speed of sound by completely changing the mood of the demo and it's not like they can't build a decent arrangement layered or not. It seems that for some reason they don't seem to care enough.harmless wrote:Unlikely, but it would be nice.
I did have another thought though: what if listening to Brendan didn't kill Backspacer? What if it was just listening to Brendan's advice on how to achieve their goal ('pop' / 'new wave' or whatever)? What if he's just really good at doing what he feels is called for from record to record? What if, given a new aim for this record, Brendan does just fine and we get a nicely produced rock album?

Re: 10th album rumors and speculation
Again, I'm not even talking about what they 'ruined' (your subjective judgment). I'm saying that the jarring and eclectic mishmash of musical influences which is Backspacer might well be some reflection of their intent for that album: 'New Wave'. There's no reason to expect O'Brien to do all of that production wizardry on an album with a different overall concept.stupidmop wrote:Then that's awesome. But however they were working with him on vs-yeild produced results better than backspacer. I just remembered reading that eddie wanted just breathe to be a little sparse song and brenden said 'NO we are going to make the most beautiful song EVAH' and added strings and whatever . I think i would have prefered the former but i don't think he killed the song or anything, hell it's probably their most successful song this decade so he was probably right and i should shutup.harmless wrote:It's unlikely they'll listen to Brendan less*, but that would be nice.

I get what you're saying though, maybe if the band came to him with binaural first he'd have got them to do thier Spaciest song EVAH.
I forgot about the abomination that is speed of sound. Yeah that song they did kill. Was that brenden or did eddie vomit cheese and lasers all over it himself?Mine wrote:I doubt that. I don't know much about New Wave but I'm just picking a band at random... Blondie. I sure as hell don't like every musicianship choice they made. But I do like their songs. Same goes for The Cure. So, I dunno, to some extent that is New Wave for me. Eclectic and strange noises, ruining otherwise good rock songs. Synths, lasers, you name it.

I'm with ya. they tried something and seemed like they had fun with it. I rather enjoy having the good quality acoustic demo along with the over the top version. In the end I still like Speed of Sound. I know nothing about new wave or its definition but the Backspacer version really sounds like an intentional ode to the 80's.harmless wrote:I don't know much about New Wave but I'm just picking a band at random... It wouldn't make sense for eddie to ruin his own song? or wouldn't make sense for eddie to let brenden ruin his song?Mine wrote:It's his song, it wouldn't make sense.stupidmop wrote:

There's every chance they got into the studio and said "Well, we had our fun. Let's make a rock album now." It would be really nice if this time, we got what we were hoping for last time.

have you gotten the full band version live? i dont think i really liked it until it opened a show for me in 03, then in 08 when i got it again i was fully in love with the song.Coach wrote:Agreed that there is improvement, but I don't really enjoy either version of Can't Keep.stip wrote:Monkey_Driven wrote:I wouldn't mind a more fleshed out version of Without You, Sleeping By Myself, or Light Today but not on an album. play the uke songs can't keep and then riot act's can't keep. If you can improve a song that much with a full band version I'm on board.

Yeah, I've seen it live, and it's difficult to judge because when I'm seeing them live, I just about love every tune because it's happening, well, live right in front of me!Dr. Van Nostrand wrote:have you gotten the full band version live? i dont think i really liked it until it opened a show for me in 03, then in 08 when i got it again i was fully in love with the song.Coach wrote:Agreed that there is improvement, but I don't really enjoy either version of Can't Keep.stip wrote:Monkey_Driven wrote:I wouldn't mind a more fleshed out version of Without You, Sleeping By Myself, or Light Today but not on an album. I guess I fall into the category of wanting a straight up rock record. There's plenty of room for uke songs and such with their solo efforts, but Pearl Jam is best when it's rock...hard rock.

Re: 10th album rumors and speculation
Personally I found Backspacer pretty refreshing after S/T (even though I like S/T more). It was a rather surprising approach to both the marketing and the album.harmless wrote:Thejambi wrote:I'm with ya. they tried something and seemed like they had fun with it. I would love a dirtier rock album for sure. Mainly I would like the music to shine through and drive the songs more than Ed. Which the past two albums Ed's pacing has seemed to smother the songs (even though I think his melodies in most cases have gotten more developed).

I appreciate that they tried to do something different, i just do not enjoy the sound of it. There's just too much going on, it's a swirling sonic mess of wtf to me.
The demo is ok though.

I'd rather listen to Coldplay's version.
