Put another way: imagine if they did another "middle of the road" rock record instead of the left turn (for them) of Backspacer. There would be no interesting context to place the new record in. It would probably feel like "more of the same," which equals death for a longtime rock band.

Now, this doesn't mean Backspacer is a genius record, rather it's exactly what they intended it to be - a fun palate cleanser of sorts meant to add a new color to the palette (to mix metaphors).

After the new record is out, Backspacer will be something to react off of instead of endlessly reflect upon. The former suits it better.
i like the thought, but i still hope backspacer was just totally a one off and they decide not to try it again, though that might also mean that in 5 or 6 years it is being called a lot of peoples favorite because its so much different then everything else they have done.

i thought you were meaning the whole " the tenth album is the logical extension of backspacer" only they make it work better and it is liked
nope. read it again doc. then go to your room and think about what you've done.
yeah, thats what i get for trying to read threads while im in the middle of entering inspection receipts  the part about setting it up perfectly is what threw me. i will work on it

If this album is a Backspacer 2 then I will finally be disappointed in this band musically. They have yet to release two back to back albums with the same approach or the same result. I get Backspacer and I appreciate it. I credit the short and "simple" method Eddie wanted with it to what he did with Into the Wild. So far the descriptions of the 4 songs all seem drastically different from each other..( assuming its credible).

I give this band props. I am stoked or this album mainly because I have no idea what to expect.
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.

At least we're still here because a new PJ album is always a surprise. If they break that tradition now it will be disappointing. There's less reason to change the formula next time.

Guys, I haven't been around for the last few pages. Someone (preferably Jorge) recap it for me.

I probably mentioned depression at some point. That's all I know.

Also, Nostrand complained about hit songs bringing too many teeny bopper girls into the pit, and stip perked up quite a bit about that. If I remember correctly, he said something vaguely offensive like "Twenty or not, here I come."

I'm interested in BurtReynold's 'No comment.' Let's launch an unofficial inquiry. But let's not involve 10c, we don't want them to cause unwanted public uproar or excitement.

I listened to a recent PJ concert (think it was from 2013 or 2012) on PJ Radio and Ed was still doing that over enunciation on a bunch of the tunes.

If he's still doing that, I fear we'll get more of that on the new record, which would be a bad thing. I think this over enunciation pattern is just as bad as anything else being mentioned in this thread.

it's really the only complaint I have about the contemporary music.

it's also much more pronounced live than in studio, though.

You're good at identifying missteps with vocals. I never found Michael Stipe's voice "nasally" until you referenced a few songs where he sounded like that during the R.E.M. tourney a few years back and now I am sensitive to things like that.

By the way... R.E.M. :peace:

All these complaints about Pearl Jam, still bring me back to R.E.M. At least PJ is issuing a new record where I'm bound to like at least 4-6 tunes.

Yeah, as a high school teacher myself, I'd edit that one. The NSA is reading this. ;)

Does anyone have concrete proof as to how B O'B has shaped PJ's songs? Aside from Better Man, his influence to keep songs concise, and his infatuation with loudness, what else? He's never shared a songwriting credit, simply a producer/mixer and maybe advisor.
