This one is easy: if the voting culture changes, yes; otherwise, no.

I don't know when and if that sea change will occur. I know there are some writers who are very vocal about the fact that they're fine voting for PED users--I probably would be, too--but it doesn't seem to be a high percentage.

From what I've read, it seems like once more Boomers are replaced with Xers, the voting culture you mention will happen.

I'm a yes on Ortiz and I'll admit I'm fully biased on him...it's almost impossible to be a Red Sox fan and not be biased with regards to him

Unless I'm a total fucking idiot (opened the door there, didn't I) ... a retired player only has so many years worth of votes and then they come off the ballot for good. So this change would have to occur significantly in, what, 20 years from now if he retires this year? Something like that? 5 year waiting period then 15 years on the ballot?

15 years on the ballot assuming you receive the right percentage (whatever it is) to stay on year after year

If I'm not mistaken, the bar is ridiculously low--like 5% to stay on the ballot. And I'm pretty sure they just reduced the years you can stay on the ballot to ten, but if your first year on the ballot was before the change, you can stay on for 15.

realistically, what do you think his offensive numbers would like if he did have to field a position for the majority of each season?

I don't think he would've lasted, he can barely do what he does now

but that's sort of beside the point...if the guy is good enough I don't think he should be punished for "just" being a DH...same with Edgar Martinez

Yeah DH is a valid position in the American League. The two best ever to play that position should be in the Hall of Fame.

Good thing there's enough safeties (Dawkins, Lynch, Atwater, Reed, Polamalu) that played when he did to push him into the Hall of Very Good zone on football merits alone.

Also, given their recent retirements, we should think about Steve Smith (7th all time receiving) and Robert Mathis (17th all time in sacks).
