In light of that super ultra deluxe set; I'm wondering how long it will be before we start seeing special editions with new scenes of the LOTR trilogy? It's coming up on 20 years isn't it? Or do they do that stuff for 25th anniversaries?

Jesus Christ. How many extra scenes can there be? Each movie was 4 1/2 hours long!

Well Jackson does say on the extras of LOTR a few times that there's a on of other stuff they shot and maybe they'll see the light of day someday on the 20th(?) anniversary edition. He's half joking but there was a lo of other stuff that was shot.


Be cool if bluray or whatever the next thing is could have everything on one disc and just in the menu options you could pick which version you want to watch. Guess that doesnt make the studio much more money so it'll never happen. It's a cool idea though. (Mine? I wonder)

I recently watched the trilogy for the first time in a few years (extended editions)

Surprised to find Return of the King as being pretty rushed & bad. Some truly awful dialogue & deliveries in that one.

It was sad because I fucking LOVE this trilogy, and spent many hours in my late college & early-mid 20's obsessing over & consuming it. Looking back, I feel the first 2 are goddamn masterworks & the last is just ok. Lots of things they spent time on that were irrelevant at the expense of more important things that were cut. IMHO.

Return of the King is inconsistent, but the highs in that are spectacular.

Watched and really paid attention to the extended edition of Fellowsip last night for the first time in a really long time. Man there's an awful lot of cheesy almost camp stuff in this film. Someone in the extras says 'it's a multimillion dollar indie film' and it feels like it in some places. Galadriel&Celeborn coming down the stairs looks so pantomime & hammy now.
Sam and the two hobbits suddenly joining th fellowship at the council is awful. Could have been done so much better. Bilbo suddenly turning into monster when he tries to grab the ring from
Frodo.
Stuff like that.


And I say that as someone who loves these films. There's also far too much on the nose/obvious directing. And I agree with the point about a lot of time being wasted on pointless stuff. And looking a it now, it steers away from actual story points an awful lot more than I ever realised. And not all of it in the name of getting it al in or moving the story along.


Some just bad design choices too- I know they went to huge lengths on this but then for example they get to Caras Galadhon, the Elven city at the heart of Lorien. And it's just some slightly taller trees. Nothing special about it or even Elven looking about it at all. Clashes wildly with the almost overdesign in rivendell and everywhere else.
Knit picky but stupid writing - elrond talks about the battle where the ring is cut from saurons hand 'I was there 3000 years ago when the courage of men failed' Gandalf then says there is one who could unite them-Elrond 'he left that path long ago' ehhh Aragorn is only 80 at the time of FOTR. How long ago is long ago now?

The cast overall is great with the exception of Legolas and I find Beans Boromir over acted in parts. But casting Mortensen was a master stroke. He brings weight to the whole thing. Such a good move to replace Stuart Townsend with him. It wouldn't have worked with him at all.

it still holds up as a great adventure film and the music is one of the best scores ever. But it's way more flawed than I remember.

ROTK is probably my favorite. I think the perfect place to end is after they all bow to the hobbitses. After that I turn it off so I don't have to sit through all the other endings.
