i was talking with a friend and came to the idea that naz will get off this time, due to some of the flubs hinted at last night, but'll then end up actually killing someone on the outside anyway, as the system has nurtured his violent side. the show ends with him being shipped off to rikers again.

I agree. It'll be some variation of this, or he'll be in debt to Freddie. And can a dude ever explain away knuckle tatts?spike wrote:i was talking with a friend and came to the idea that naz will get off this time, due to some of the flubs hinted at last night, but'll then end up actually killing someone on the outside anyway, as the system has nurtured his violent side. the show ends with him being shipped off to rikers again.

I think the situation with Freddie and all that in the latest one is going to be the 'message'.
It's all been heavy handed message stuff about people/police/judicial systems treatment of minorities, now we're seeing Nas being corrupted and brought under prison 'justice' and how that will come back on him in the next one. I don't see Freddie letting him away with being honest about the other two guys. He'll be furious once he's thought on it and realises this new guy has lost him two trusted soldiers. Can't see Nas making it out of prison alive. Hello final big message.

I'm continually impressed by how this show keeps laughing at the ways we've been conditioned to watch cop/court shows--for weeks, we've been debating what the magic bullet would be, i.e. the piece of evidence that would either exonerate or damn Nas. But everything's been presented at trial, and we're really no closer to knowing what the verdict will be. The only thing that hasn't been presented, I'd say, is anything about Andrea's step father. Is Stone saving that for his closing? I love how the preview for next week's episode gave very few hints about what's going to happen next week. Can't wait!

The kiss was very weird; what was especially odd was that it was peppered with flashbacks that are obviously Naz's memories even though the scene seemed to be from Chandra's point-of-view. It's one of the few really poor editing choices in the series, I think.
But when it comes to it as a character moment, I'm willing to reserve judgment. There have been a number of times where the show has sprung character backstory on us with intriguing results, where usually I'd just groan and say, "Come on!" The most obvious example is of course Naz. He was painted by his parents (and, to an extent, by himself) as a "good kid" for 4-5 episodes, and then suddenly we start learning that there are things that have been left unsaid: violent outbursts, selling pills, etc. At first, it seems like a contradiction, but when you dig into it, this still jive's with Naz's self image: the violence was a survival strategy not even worth telling his attorney about, and selling Adderall is just something stupid kids do. This is why I slightly disagree with people who keep talking about Naz changing in prison: I think it's more of a change of degree than a change in how he views and operates in the face of adversity. Chandra's obviously got something bubbling up under the surface, and we may never get the backstory, but I think Dscans is right that it's just meant to sit there and humanize her, not to be a shocking revelation.

I'm suprised the defense didn't spin the adderall thing as an example of a poor kid trying to pay his way through college. Especially since it was his prescription; he was the one making the sacrifice. (Plus the DA's shitty interpretation of "business." The markup is nothing when it comes to value. $10 a pop is only outrageous if you can find it cheaper elsewhere.)
I need to rewatch the first episode again but it makes more sense now when I think of Naz' reaction to Bodie's islamophobia. Naz is presented as passive so far but when he turns around and asks "what did you say?" it was his Marty McFly/chicken moment. Islamaphobia seems to be the one area where he becomes defensive.

Agreed about the Naz/Bodie moment. If Andrea hadn't grabbed him, he probably would've tried to take them both on.

That kiss felt like a dream sequence for a bit, and then when turned out to be real ...

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I'd go the other way on this. Turturro is excellent, but it's slow and there really isn't much to it.VinylGuy wrote:Yes.tragabigzanda wrote:We're halfway through the first ep, it's a struggle for me to take this seriously. Should we keep going?

I can't believe that it was the crime scene photographer that did it.VinylGuy wrote:Ill see it tomorrow but im already psyched about it.cutuphalfdead wrote:Loved the ending.

There's a theory among book readers that Andrea's soul passed into the cat and that she's been trying to give Stone clues all along.
