Re: Sharing Cinematic Values #5: VinylGuy
Do we really think fanboys had anything to do with Suicide Squad? Are there SS fanboys?

These opinions are hype and advertizing.... interesting. I want to hear more thoughts about this.

Based on loyalties...
But aren't we all victims of that to one degree or another? Aren't you excited about and hyping Rogue One because of your loyalty to its director and his work?

Plenty of people take movies and art seriously.
Weirdo.

But I do think even among those people there is still a faction that thinks of film as a lesser artform. Which is an interesting conversation in and of itself. I wonder why that is, that it's "okay" for film to be escapism but it's not okay for painting or sculpture to be escapism.

Re: Sharing Cinematic Values #5: VinylGuy
I do wonder if the issue with the DC movies is really that people are resistant or opposed to something different. Maybe it's more about quality. I get that you guys liked BvS but a lot of people really didn't. And not because it was different, because it didn't work.

Re: Sharing Cinematic Values #5: VinylGuy
Or maybe you're right. Maybe, at least when it comes to comic book movies, people don't want a big challenge. That's an interesting idea. But again I feel like most of the criticism I've heard surrounding BvS wasn't about that at all.

Only God Forgives is a great example. It doesn't work half as well as it should. You can be challenging and not treat your audience like 5 year olds but your movie still has to be good, it still has to work at the foundation. OGF doesn't work for me.

I'm not going to call him an amatuer but boy oh boy do I really not care for his work.

Hey Vermont, what Pauline Kael book would you recommend that I start with?

Re: Sharing Cinematic Values #5: VinylGuy
It's interesting to me that I feel like I'm a person that really doesn't care for formula and all of that. So I think there's something else to discuss here than that. That can't be the thing itself.

You don't care about gender swaping but obviously a ton of other people really do.

Re: Sharing Cinematic Values #5: VinylGuy
I agree, but it has to be "just about political reasons" to some degree at the beginning to get the ball rolling so that down the line it won't just be about political reasons. But, yes, I agree with the heart of what you're saying. But that's because you and I don't give a shit about gender/race swaping the way some others do.

Yes!
More diversity behind the camera! 100% agree. PREACH!
Great points about new points of view and ideology vs politics.

Re: Sharing Cinematic Values #5: VinylGuy
It's not just about the people in front but those are the people the people see. Those are the people who get the exposure. So it makes some sense to a degree.

Don't worry, TVG, that's not really what happens in Ghostbusters.
