Well that fun. Great setting in a beach park south of LA. It was a typical stage & lawn set up but there were some bleachers in the back with the ocean behind them. The layout wasn't big at all. There was a good crowd but it never felt overly packed like can happen at festivals sometimes. And of course they had various vendors set up with display tents. Definitely had that Southern California vibe, like something out of Beach Boys song.
I got there during Mudhoney's set. While in line for an overpriced bbq sandwich I heard X and caught Ed's singing on The New World. Almost right after that Jack Irons went on the little stage to the side. He did some Jack Irons style drumming before turning on a record track. I didn't recognize it right away until Ed came out (to no one's surprise) and started singing Shine On You Crazy. He looked tan & upbeat.
Elvis Costello played an hour. I had not seen in concert before. I'm not really a fan but he did a couple piano songs that I liked better than his guitar songs. He played Allison next to last before saying he's got a friend to help him out. Of course it was Ed and the song was (What's So Funny About) Peace, Love and Understanding. There was a fair number of Elvis fans but judging by the shirts and the reaction this was an Ed crowd.
During the setup I saw them roll out a drum kit along with the small organ he's had on his solo tours. He came out a little before 8 and played until right at 9:30. He opened with four uke songs before settling in on guitar. There were more covers than I wanted but that can be expected. There were some flubs, more so musically than lyrically. After one such flub he looked around for someone to blame before realizing he there by himself, with his small balls. Somehow that made sense at the time. He talked about Trump before Soon Forget and someone from the crowd got a laugh pointing out the small instument/small hands link. He told a story about surfing on this beach as an 11 year old with a 12 year old surfboard with an elastic strap around his ankle. But he kept such stories to a thankful minimum with a hard curfew. The Into the Wild songs had the starry night back drop. Kelly Slater came on and instead of playing on Society (which I expected) sang Indifference with him. Slater actually sang pretty well and added a country-type drawl to the song. I could nitpick the setlist some but Parting Ways was a nice surprise, seemingly added spur of the moment. It was on electric guitar as were a couple others like Porch. Betterman was played in the same style as Ed's last solo tours and the '09 (?) Bridge date. There was a new song but it didn't particularly stand out to me one way or the other. Instead of an encore break he thanked the organizers and gave one last little speech before turning on the backing tape for Hard Sun with a beautiful sunset back drop. He then brought everyone out for a Free World sing along with Jack on drums. There was a kid behind who looked about 12 and seemed to be there with his parents. He knew all the words to the Ed songs and looked like he was having a blast; that was cool to see.
This was the first time I had seen Ed play a solo set in a festival setting. What surprised was how relatively quiet and unchatty the crowd was for his performance. Like I said, this was an Ed crowd and they were there to see him, not just hang out and drink with friends. I had seen Ed play before much rowdier crowds in nicer settings. And the crowd did tilt older, definitely more born in the 70s & 80s than 90s. There were complaints about limited food/drink choices, high prices of said food & drink, cash only vendors and some people apparently had shuttle issues but for me it was a great festival experience. I'm so glad I went; totally worth it. And one of the vendors was a local wildlife society and got to hold a couple of their king snakes so that was cool too.

Ed was around Sunday too. He introduced a couple acts and sang "Tonight You Belong to Me" with Cat Power. I'm glad he included her "Good Woman" in his set.

Sirius XM is airing this - heard the beginning of it on my way to the bar, and RITFW on my way home. I guess they'll be airing it again at 7 eastern today.

Is this the first time they've aired an EV show?

Changing "the townsfolk, they all laugh" to "the townsfolk, we all laugh" in "Soon Forget" might be the most insufferable lyric change I've ever heard.
