My review of the No Code reissue

I just listened to both sections back-to-back and it doesn't jump out at me as being an after-the-fact overdub. Ed's vocal tone sounds pretty much spot-on for the rest of his vocals in the song.

I think WCT's explanation makes the most sense - the "avalanche, falling fast" line is probably what's on the original master tape, the version that made the album (in 1996) was flown in via an edit as Ed decided to change the line.

Coming back to the tape many years later, nobody remembers this and the alternate (but original) lyric ends up making its way out.

Yes, definitely the same drum take. It's a completely different mix but that's Jack playing drums on the Lost Dogs version too, 100%. Same little fills and everything.

There's a similar issue on all of the recent vinyl pressings of Pantera's The Great Southern Trendkill: the remastered editions don't include the guitar solo for the song "Floods," one of the band's best-known. The story behind the song is that Dimebag Darrell (may he ride through the Night Lands forever) added the solo at the last minute, and the current theory (never confirmed by the band or label) is that the original master tape of the solo is lost.

I bought it yesterday.

While I just had the time to listen to side A, I think it sounds good and it's refreshing to hear an LP version. Overall, No Code is an excellent " listening session " album. It's my first time listening to the LP version (never heard the original LP).

" Sometimes " sounds nice and warm, but having listened to the CD version for a long time, I always anticipate the blasting first chords of Hail, Hail which seems less in your face on this remaster. Anyone got that ?

As for the " Who you are " debate, I always thought that the " Avalanche, falling fast " line was on the original single release. Therefore it found a place on the RVM collection. I was happy with it on RVM since it was a single collection and I had never heard that variant. Last night, I closed my eyes while listening ; wondering weither it would the " Circumstances " or the " Avalanche " line. I wasn't disappointed.

Long story short : I think the " Avalanche " line was on the original single which came out before the album. The original No Code, on CD (can't tell for LP), had the " Circumstances " line. They probably kept the original Who you are master for the LP remaster, as many said earlier.

What's always great about getting decently improved masters is that the stuff that's best served is the stuff you've been overlooking. The guitars on Off He Goes sound a tad richer and a bit more isolated, sure, but that shuffling shaker in the breakdowns benefits far more from the new space than they do. Layered vocals always sound so much better, too, as the backing voices finally get some space of their own.

The mild dynamic shifts caused by returning some of those missing shades often serve transitions really well, too.

I considered a few different approaches, such as suggesting that eciglover was a planted shill for the e-cig industry, railing against traditional cigarettes. Another was to go the Reddit route and just say "username checks out". Ultimately I should have just chuckled to myself at the semi-relevant username.
