his post wasn't 'I would rather hear all new songs rather than songs we have at least some existing version of' (a totally legit response, and one I might share if I wasn't eager to hear what they can do with my favorite song from uke songs). It was 'the inclusion of sleeping by myself speaks to a lack of inspiration/creativity' that I was responding to.

parting ways was from the no code or yield sessions. I'm sure there are other examples of that too.

It's not a question of how many songs you write. It's a question of putting the best songs you have on an album. If a reworked sleeping with myself is really good then they should include it.

The shit people get pissy about...I am consistently amazed (why, I don't know) at how anxious people are to sabotage their enjoyment of a new album, or invent things to complain about.

Just A: wait for a tracklisting, B: wait to hear the song if it is on the record, C: judge whether or not it was inspired then.

there may be a very good reason to hate this, but we don't have it yet.
I think there's a pretty big difference with Parting Ways and something like this. I mean, Sleeping By Myself isn't some stowaway on a bootleg demo collection. It was released on a studio record (wasn't it even a single from it?) It's been out there for years. I don't think it's a reason to sink the whole ship, but you can't see why someone wouldn't feel a little bit like that's a wasted opportunity, considering it's been four years since a PJ record? They may be proven wrong by how great the song, but it's a perfectly reasonable tact to take to the news that they're including it.
But, in the grand scheme of things, how many people actually heard Uke Songs?

7. Maybe 8 if you count Ed's grandma. Then again, I think she only said she listened to it to be nice.

I mean, it's speculative but it's possible. I don't know if anyone could know that for sure besides the band, but all I'd say is that it is a somewhat strange thing to do. But I don't really have a dog in the fight, besides the fact that it's mildly disappointing (sleeping by myself being a song that never really did anything for me).

That being said, it is more interesting to hear what will happen then the last time this kind of thing happened (Can't Keep on Uke Songs). At least we'll be hearing the transition from less to more.

My only real problem with Gone is Matt's unsuitable drumming in the verses.
You're cool with the "gas in my tank..." line? That kind of derails the song for me. The same thing happens later on with Inside Job (although on a much larger scale)
Well that's on the demo too, but I've never understood what's so bad about that line. Same goes for the Inside Job lyrics. I like em both. They're both a helluva lot better than most of the Backspacer lyrics.

The Inside Job lyrics are total cheese. Mike is a total cornballer and should never be allowed to write lyrics again...ever.

These life affirmation lyrics have more than worn out their welcome. I'm also growing very sick of the whole humans are small compared to the universe trip Eddie has been on for the past 12 years.

I wish he'd get pissed off about something again.
did you like S/T? Other than the last track almost every song is pissed off about something
I liked it...But something about it just didn't stick. The buzz wore off very quickly.

The lyrics to "Inside Job" are basically the worst lyrics ever written by anyone in the history of writing.

Yeah I think it was pretty universally received as one of the best songs on uke as well. I like it just how it is. Light today is the one I assumed it would be. waving palms with lyrics would make sense too (tuolemne>just breath)

Also, it's very possible this pj guy is full of shit. Other than knowing about the countdown he comes off as a mighty fan boy when speaking of the songs he heard. If you're going to spill the beans how about spilling a little more than saying it's hot shit and sirens sounds like black. Fuck that dude :peace:

Well if sleeping by myself was written more recently than the other uke songs maybe the pj version came first, or they started working on it before ed put the uke version on the album.

I sure hope it hasn't transmuted into that country sounding thing from the vine clip. bleh.

I think whatever it was in that vine clip sounded promising. I hope it's that, personally. But then I've got nothing against country if it's good.

Nailed it. To get country right, it really needs to be laid back, loose, and a little gritty. Just like my ex's vagina.

Birds in Hell wrote:There's some excellent versions of Gone from the 2006 tour, it's just one of those songs (like Marker) they didn't manage to nail in the studio. Jeff's bass really elevates the song live. I have no issues at all with the "gas in my tank" line.
The line that always gave me the willies in that song was "All the lights of the city/They only look good when I'm speeding." I get what he's trying to convey with the lyric but to me it always comes across like he's trying to draw attention to the fact that he's doing something cool and against the law. Probably not fair, but the song is so dreary and has such little kinetic energy to it that any affiliation with "speed" just feels completely inappropriate and awkward.

Probably one of my least favorite Pearl Jam songs. (Though I agree about the 2006 versions.)
