It definitely isn't.

Queens would be my first suggestion for a "bands who never bettered their debut" thread.

See above.

Nah.

It's great (so are In Utero and Dude, Incredible, for that matter) but nah.

I definitely agree with Death from above 1979. I didn't think they could come even close to their first record, but they got so much better.
I'll also add:
Fartbarf
St Vincent (but I don't expect anyone to agree with me)
Iggy Pop

This exercise is really only interesting if the band has been around for a while. Bands that are on their second album have a 50/50 shot.

The only artist/band I can come up with on my own is HoneyHoney. But they're only on their third record. :|

Ain't nobody gonna yell at you for that pick, buddy.

For me it's Strange Mercy, but I will never argue with someone who picks St. Vincent.

Really she should be in the "Artists who haven't released a bad or even mediocre record" thread.

I like them all 4 about the same.
Marry Me or Strange Mercy are probably the best.

Marry Me is probably my least favorite so far. But that's like saying, 'last night I had sex and it was least favorite orgasm so far.'

That record is still a 9/10.

I go back and forth between liking S/T and Strange Mercy more. At the moment it's S/T.

Both just outstanding records. And S/T has two or three of her all time best songs on it (and my personal overall favorite). I think Strange Mercy just hangs together so well. It's not just the songs it's the flow and the mood and the sequencing and the performance. It's everything. But again, one could argue the same for S/T and I'd hardly fight them on it.

More and more, think Do Make Say Think's Other Truths fits this definition. It has no weak songs (I mean, there's only four of them, after all), and because it's lean, focused, and concise, it has no need of transitional pieces to tie everything together.

What is your favorite St. Vincent song?

Also, to further the QOTSA discussion, as much as I LOVE ...Like Clockwork, SFTD still melts my brain every time I listen to it. I was 19 when it came out and I had pretty much decided that no one was capable of putting out a great rock record anymore. That all changed when i picked up the record on release day just so I could hear my favorite drummer play drums again. However, part of the brilliance of ...Like Clockwork is that it doesn't even sound like the same band. I'm not much of a lyric guy, but the lyrics on there speak to me very deeply.

Good choice! Digital Witness is the song that turned me onto St Vincent and remains my favorite to this day. Yet another reason that makes me think her latest is her best
