Throw it on some night when you've got the house to yourself. It's got "ambience," man.

That's why I've never listened to it.

Because it's all instrumental, or because you never have the house to yourself, or because it's got "ambience?"

Re: Bands Whose First Album Is Their Worst
I just can never get myself motivated to listen to ambient or instrumental music anymore. I've lost all interest. I'd much rather listen to Trent scream juvenile bullshit over his music.
Well, maybe.

Don't get me wrong -- it's not like it's two hours of ambient drone. The compositions are precise, they have distinct rhythms, clear melodies and harmony, etc. I doubt it'll replace the screaming for you, but it has its place. It's not as hard to get into as I may be suggesting.

Lol. Couldn't be me because I pity anyone that likes Razorblade Suitcase or any Bush record (that was them right?).Kevin Davis wrote:Is there a chance that you're my former employee?parasolmonster wrote:Over the last few years NIN has become my favorite band. I'm continually amazed at the depth of the music. I can obsess over an album, listening to it for months on end and then come back to it a few months later and find new things that blow me away. There are so many songs that I don't get, that suddenly click for me a year later. For example, I hated Year Zero when it came out. I thought all the songs sounded the same and it was a mess. However, 9 months later I saw some of the songs live and it clicked. It's now in my top three. Now I go back and forth between The Fragile, Year Zero, and Hesitation Marks as being my favorite. Trent's modern lyrics really speak to me
While I can enjoy Pretty Hate Machine from time to time, for the most part I find the music to be dated and simply a starting point for Trent's growth as a musician. Plus I find the lyrics on that one record to be junior high level poetry at best.
Ranking 'em:
1. The Fragile
2. Year Zero
3. Hesitation Marks
4. With Teeth
5. Ghosts
6. Broken
7. The Slip
8. The Downward Spiral
9. Pretty Hate Machine
As I mentioned before, 1-3 are pretty interchangeable depending on my mood. Plus, TDS would be a little higher but as I get older I can't handle being in that dark of a place for an entire album.

I'm like Stip by liking the later records better than the early records? I've never paid attention, but I'm assuming he's this way about PJ?
For the record, Vitalogy is untouchable in my book and I lovingly hate Backspacer.

You put PHM and TDR as literally the two worst. That's...stipish.

Re: Bands Whose First Album Is Their Worst
the only thing not stippish about it is that he didn't write a dissertation about each album

Gotcha. I guess I just feel that he continues to grow as an artist. But as for dissertations, I LOVE how well Stip writes out his opinions, but that's definitely not my thing. I had enough of that kind of stuff getting my bachelors and masters degrees.LoathedVermin72 wrote:You put PHM and TDR as literally the two worst. That's...stipish.

Stip loves Backspacer, and anything Eddie has wrote, touched, sneezed on, pissed on etc...... I agree about NIN tho The Fragile is easily their bestparasolmonster wrote:I'm like Stip by liking the later records better than the early records? I still hear new things and make new discoveries every time I listen to the Fragile.
