Bands Whose First Album Is Their Best

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Alanis could probably go on the "first album is their worst" thread
If we're counting those two Canadian teen-pop records, maybe. But Now is the Time might be worse than Alanis.

Similarly, Björk. And Shakira. And Janelle Monae. All of these have early albums that don't resemble their later work and they've since disowned.

Just from looking through my music collection:
====================================
The Doors
The Band
Ramones (though you can make an argument for any of their first 3 albums as their best)
Television
Van Halen
Dead Kennedys
Joy Division
The Wipers
The Smiths
R.E.M. (though R.E.M. has like 5-6 best albums...but I think Murmur tops them all)
Mudhoney
Rage Against the Machine
Wu-Tang Clan
Sunny Day Real Estate
Weezer (I love Pinkerton but it isn't as good as the Blue album)
Foo Fighters
Interpol
Arcade Fire (see above about the Ramones)
Bloc Party
Band of Horses
Art Brut
Kaius

Oh yeah. I do have a soft spot for the third one though.
Just rub it a little, it will get harder.
I think "There is Nothing Left to Lose" is their best, but I only really know their hits other than those first few albums.

I'd throw The Mynabirds on this list.

Yeah, probably. But all three are very close.

Totally. That wasn't meant as any kind of slight on the other two. Far from.

I think Generals is my least favorite, which is insane.

The last one is the only Mynabirds I like a lot. The other two have their moments.

I know. I'm responding directly to the conversation above.

I don't hate Coldplay at all, and I agree that Viva La Vida is best (especially if you include Prospekt's March).

Definetely. I love all 3 records, but that one is still my favorite by some margin.
