I haven't seen it, but it's Doug Liman, so I'm interested. Any good?
I'm watching it now. It's decent so far

John Wick 2 is coming out soonish.

I like action movies, I like Keonu Reeves.

The fact that he did all the stunts, with the fight scenes and car scenes, really added to the badassness of the film. It was cool to see the long, no cut scenes. But even so, the scenes themselves stood on their own. The choreography was unique, and enjoyable. Really great action flick, surprisingly so.

Looking forward to part 2.

I hear this a lot: multidimensional villains are best. But is that really true? I don't think it is. Most of my favorite villains are complete monsters: from King Jeoffrey to Predator. Even Vader was a total force choking bastard until the very end of Jedi (his character didn't so much "arc" as do a total 180 at the last second.) There are some great, well rounded antagonists out there, but one dimensional monsters are awesome!

I think the villain should be appropriate for the context the movie establishes. Does Commando need a multidimensional villain? No, because it's not a multidimensional movie. It does one thing and it does it well. Does Predator? No, it needs a villain that is even more macho and powerful than its cast of macho dudes. But there are plenty of movies that benefit enormously from a more nuanced antagonist, such as The Rock and The Matrix. It just depends on the movie.

I agree that context is the most important factor. However, I think larger than life villains are more effective when you know very little about them. Basically, the idea of don't give them a backstory (Chris Nolan's Joker, The Strangers) or show them as little as possible (Alien, Cloverfield) because the fear of the unknown is always going to be more terrifying than what can be shown on screen. The more you know about something, the more you humanize it and sympathize it. For me this is the biggest Star Wars prequel issue, because seeing Vader as a kid makes the monster underneath the armor more humanized. The same argument works for Boba Fett as well.

William Friedkin is a mostly terrible director.

I have seen nine movies (released in 2016) so far this year. That's actually really impressive for me. In October. I usually don't see 10 movies from a given year until well after that year has passed.

Even more astounding, I've actually at least liked and in a lot of cases loved all but one of those nine films.
