Well I'm in the minority that thought Amongst the Waves was pretty cool. So was Severed Hand. The weakest of those songs is Unthought Known, but I don't think it's because it's 'PJ trying to be PJ'. I just think it's because it's a weak song. God knows they've written weak songs before, whatever they were trying to do. I have far more hatred for 'Big Wave' than ATW, and that didn't 'sound like PJ' in the way that some people think Backspacer was apparently 'trying to'. I never really got the 'PJ trying to be PJ' accusation.

I also don't relate to the trashing ATW receives. I think UK was just a failed song in the vein of LBC.

Backspacer was PJ trying something new. I honestly don't think any member of Pearl Jam had the thought of "Hey lets try to sound like us again!" as much as "Hey let's try to make an impact again!"

I'd go the other way and call UK a great song, if a little tired for them having been over that ground before. It only has the barest resemblance to LBC for me, and is a far better song for me. But opinions and assholes I guess.

Unthought Known isn't a bad song. It just doesn't do much for me. I liked it a lot for the first month or so that Backspacer was out. But it hasn't aged very well, for me. It just feels mediocre. It's a bored song. But it's not a bad song.

You tried puttin' a little excitement on it?

Will you guys do me a kindness? Look up 'hometown girl' by the strypes on YouTube.
It's note for note Supersonic, but its kick ass. And the band are 15-17 years old. It's what Pj were aiming for and failed at. Hilarious part is the age of the lads playing.
Their other tune 'blue collar Jane' is kick ass too.

Strangely, that makes me like Supersonic a bit more than I used to.

Supersonic and Big Wave are extremely dull. There is nothing more embarrassing than attempting to sound as aggressive as you did in your youth. The self-awareness PJ had about these kind of things seems to have died. It very much comes off, when playing tracks like this, like barefaced, feeble attempts to appease nostalgic fanboys.

On the other hand, Amongst the Waves and Unknown Thought seem more like natural songwriting to their pace and aggression now. We need better lyrics and less focus on trying to write what people want. That's what made PJ so great.

These kids do it effortlessly though. They've got what PJ are grasping for in supersonic and obviously never getting it.

They were snapped up this year for a 5 album deal. British&Irish media are creaming themselves over them. Hope they stay the course.

British media creaming themselves over an untested, soon-to-be overrated and ultimately forgotten band?

Never.

Considering the aggression of Life Wasted, Comatose, WWS,Severed hand, GSMF and Got Some I guess I don't agree with your assessment of what supersonic and Big Wave are really doing. Because I don't see either of those 2 as nostalgic or really aggressive as much as more carefree.

Ya you're exactly right. It's just that hearing someone do it right does make me appreciate the song a little more. I like that PJ does still "try". I don't think they are as lazy as I have tricked myself into believing the past 5-10 years.

A big, controlled riff (ala Animal, Life Wasted) will always top an attempt to play an unmelodic punk song for me with Pearl Jam

Well I for one hope they stop being carefree, because I could go the rest of my life not hearing either of those 2 songs again....whereas I could listen to "Unthought Known" everyday. I do enjoy "Amongst the Waves", but lyrically it makes me get itchy.
