on green alone check out world leader pretend, untitled 11th song, and you are the everything, which are somewhat similar songs (I like pop song 89 and turn you inside out more too, but they're very different songs)

U2's legacy is further ruined every time Bono opens his mouth.

I know I've said it before, but he does a lot of good work here in Dublin very anonymously, donates huge amounts every Christmas and insists on anonymity cos if it goes public, half the country goes 'show off bollox' and the other half says 'is that all he gave? Mean cunt'

He can't win so he's better off just doing what he does.

There was an article published recently about him 'stealing the voice of real Africans' or something. I thought it really unfair. If he doesn't do it, nobody else will. Geldof has done his bit and with nothing but passion and class. Bonos attempts while seeming misguided or self serving, do actually make a lot of change for the better in places.

He only gets that reaction because he's got a history of being a massive show off about everything he does, and having photographs taken in Africa while wearing luxury sunglasses. I realise he might not like his reputation, but he didn't get it by donating anonymously out of the kindness of his heart. He got it by mouthing off about every good action he did. There are many philanthropists who do not do this, and I have no beef with them.

In fairness, he's never once said 'look what I did!' In any context.
What he did do, an awful lot, was browbeat all of us into joining in.
I think that's the bit that sticks in people's throats.

Well, I think that his actions said 'Look what I did!' a lot of the time. But otherwise yeah, fair enough. It's the hypocrisy of saying to us in our living rooms 'You should be living more ethically' while making a massive mint off everything he was doing.

And his band moving their whole operation from Oreland right as the recession hit didn't go down well either. They still pay personal income tax here but U2 inc is now an offshore entity. To their eternal shame.

It's silly to shit on Bono for HOW he helps people. At least he's doing something. He's certainly doing a shitload more than any of us will ever do as we nance around on a message board.

There are plenty of reasons to shit on him in the music department. Again, like when he tried to big-time everyone during RITFW by coming out by himself in the middle of the song and then being completely outclassed.

Or for writing the lyrics to "Stand Up Comedy."

stip's right though - Kite is a killer tune. The best on that record.

Well said.

I think city of blinding lights is my favourite song of theirs from the modern era.

Agreed. He has done more good to the world than I ever will, or probably ever would if I had similar means. And good on him for not being quiet about it-- visibility is important and can draw more attention and support. And I prefer "In a Little While".

You guys will like this.
Back when U2 started there was another Dublin band, that had it not been for U2, you'd probably all know/love/hate instead. They're called Aslan.
Their singer, Christy Dignam is dying with cancer and a concert was held for him a short while ago. U2 couldn't be there bit instead recorded one of Aslans songs.
It's a doozy. They almost nail it. Have a watch.
