Though I do like zooropa.
Pop over Achtung Baby or Joshua Tree or Unforgettable Fire or War is redickiless. Zooropa was a big step down from Achtung Baby but still interesting if a little strained. I got a sense that U2 was running on artistic vapors at that point. And Pop was even more smoke and mirrors. I fell off the fan wagon after Pop.
Recall U2 emerging from the giant lemon on the PopMart tour. The entire set up was intentionally ironic but isn't there something not funny funny about releasing a crap album and doubling down with the lemon metaphor. What an awesome Spinal Tap entrance. And knowing U2, they probably wrestled with the absurdity of popping out of a giant lemon on a stadium tour and concluded: "we're U2. U2 is about going big and we're cool enough to merge epic with satire." If Bono admits the sunglasses are satire I'll appreciate the giant stage lemon that much more. At the time I cringed.

This actually inspired me to listen to them on my run today. Always nice to be reminded of what an incredible song "The Unforgettable Fire" is.
I'm actually starting a drive up to Chicago later, and I have a feeling I'll be playing a lot of U2 after reading people's rankings on here. Hopefully it'll keep my focus away from wondering whether or not the new Pearl Jam or Manics singles are leaking anywhere.

To bring Pearl Jam back into this discussion, I loved Ed's mini-cover of A Sort of Homecoming on the 2005 tour. I'd love to hear him tackle the whole song in that same style (loosely based on the Wide Awake In America version).

A sort of homecoming came on today. Such a great song, and so hard to sing
I am opposed to the central idea of this thread. Pearl Jam have a legacy where it counts and U2 are a bunch of cheese balls. If PJ broken up a decade ago, face it, you'd kill for a some new c side to be unearthed. With Back spacer you get 10 plus. Avocado is actually a really cool album and if you feel differently, you have to admit its got 5-10 minutes of pure recorded Pearl Jam gold, like the intro to Severed Hand or the whole song for that matter, or the first part of Inside Job, or Army Reserve for the music, granted the vocals and lyrics are off. The secret noise track alone is pure emotion as one friend put it succinctly. Then their is Parachutes. One of my favourite songs since Pink Floyd's Paint Box.
