That was the 9/11 WS, one of the most memorable of our generation.verb_to_trust wrote:I don't remember or care who won the WS series that year. I do however remember that mariners team. What does that say about October?cutuphalfdead wrote:They should have just given the Mariners the championship in 01!Bammer wrote:If my team could win a championship in any given sport, I'd go college football first, MLB second, and then whatever comes next is a pretty distant third. I'm sure there are at least a few guys on that team who aren't prisoners of the sub intelligent standards for greatness foisted upon teams by Joe six-pack MLB fan.

Re: MLB
What you're telling me is you don't care if the Cubs win the title or not, because the playoffs are irrelevant in determining greatness. Which means the whole 100+ year drought thing is meaningless and people should calm down about it because who cares who wins the series at the end, it's the 162 games before that really matter.
I just want to make sure we're all on the same page when you react in some way to their October success or failure.

Re: MLB
Sure it'll be nice when they win one, which odds are they will seeing how everything has been set up by Theo. But the real change for the fanbase is going to be the regular contention. If they win the WS this year and somehow go back to having a good team once every 15 years or so nothing really changes. People have already forgotten the Royals exist.

Remind me when one of those Tigers teams soundly put MLB on notice by dominating for 162 games and clearly distinguishing themselves as the best team.cutuphalfdead wrote:Skitch, don't worry about all those Tigers playoff losses over the last decade. None of that shit actually matters if you think about it smartly.

Okay. So go back to winning the pennant and AL NL meeting in the world series. These one game playoffs are a total abomination.cutuphalfdead wrote:What you're arguing is that the 1990s Braves were just as impressive as the 1990s Yankees, which is absurd.

If you don't hink the TV stations suck 4 weeks out of it now...verb_to_trust wrote:B. Being hot for two weeks in October doesn't really mean anything. Smart people would realize that.

Re: MLB
The one game playoffs are absolutely a crap shoot and are a shitty way to determine a winner. But that fact is what actually makes them a great idea because it means winning your division has actual value over simply getting in with a wildcard.verb_to_trust wrote:Okay. You know, so the 100 win team has something to show over the 85 win team.

Re: MLB
Nah. They incentivize winning the division--you do that, and you're into the playoffs. You don't, you can get knocked out in one game. It actually rewards the sort of wire-to-wire consistency that you're putting up as a standard of success, you know?verb_to_trust wrote:Okay.
