Once they reached Dark Side they lost the Barrett influence that I treasure in their sound. Dogs is a cool number I admit, yet for me the early work is where the purity and magic are. Please share any related thoughts and thanks to this very fine site for giving me a forum to ramble on in!!

Power Toc H/Flaming/Matilda Mother - All really great songs, though nowhere near as good as Wolf Pack, Wined and Dined and 20 other fully realized Barrett compositions.

Apples and Oranges/Point me at the Sky - 2 Cool rare early tunes

Relics - Paintbox is maybe my favourite song ever, and I'm not even into the lyrics, Remember a Day is another. Julia Dream and Cyrus Minor are two space rock gems that I love most aspects of.

Saucerful of Secrets - Syd's slide guitar is absolutely mind blowing in Let there be more Light, esp. if you take headphones out on starry country night...one of my favourite jams ever. Remember a Day again, can't recall if the versions differ. Waters criticises Seesaw but many artists are self critical, I think its a cool song. Jugband is not overly listenable but is essential Floyd somehow. The ducks at the end have been seared into my mind thanks to certain conditions under which I first heard it.

Zabriskie Point Sessions: My favourite album easily. I have four versions of Unknown Song/Rain in the Country and each one is a masterpiece. Crumbling land is a summer at the cottage classic for me. The space rock inst. numbers Fingals Cave etc. are great too.

More/Obscured - The former is genius and Crying Song/Green is.../Ibiza Bar and more blues are all as good as it gets. I agree with Mr. Waters about Obscured, a bad cut, but I do like Childhood's End for the awesome playing by Gilmour. Free Four and Wrights song something mentioning a bottle of wine are cheesy but still good. Whats Uh the Deal is totally inauthentic.

Atom Heart Mother - Floyd at a creative peak, even if they didn't fully appreciate it. The whole thing is great for me, esp. If/Fat Old Sun/1/3 of Alan's Breakfast. Off topic but a techno band the KLF did an album inspired by this called Chill Out. I am no techno fan but this is one I'll make an exception for.

Ummagumma - Brilliant, odd album. I'm so thankful it was made. Part of Rick's first few songs, The Narrow Way Pt1 (Gilmour's finest hour imo) and Granchester Meadows have been rays of pure light in my lifetime.

Meddle - There peak in my mind in terms of quality. Echoes was something they did before but this is a perfected form. The final vocal section is a high water mark for the band. Pillow of Winds is one of their best lyrics and songs in my mind. Fearless is neat and One of these days sounds great when you first hear it. Pompeii is a great concert film to go with.

i'd have to agree with the majority of your post. although, i liked where the band went after meddle.

sysyphus (part 2) has always been tremendous to my ears, so somebody that enjoys ummagumma is a friend of mine.

Thanks very much, I appreciate that! I used to do a periodical on my favourites with a lot of careful thought put into it, now I work too much and half to resort to ranting to ensure these tracks have a chance to reach the ear of someone who may not know the glory of Narrow Way or Unknown Song. I cooled off on Dark Side/WYWH/Animals and esp. the Wall as I find it kind of depressing somehow. Its very well done however. I simply crave that positive energy of the first half of their output.

i consider myself a big floyd fan, but i hardly listen to anything prior to meddle. i love meddle through animals and like parts of the wall, though i really appreciate the concept. i agree that its too dark at times.

anyone care to make me a playlist of 10 songs or so that i should check of pre-meddle songs? I have access to all of their songs.

- Astronomy Domine (both versions i.e. the one from the Piper album and the live one from Ummagumma for the sake of comparison - i like both versions)
- Vegetable Man
- Remember A Day
- Careful With That Axe, Eugene (a live version from a bootleg would be better than the Ummagumma version imo. the studio cut is good too, a bit more jazzy than what it became afterwards)
- Julia Dream/Cirrus Minor (similar songs - i can't choose, i love them both)
- Summer 68
- Fat Old Sun (live - look for it on a bootleg)
- Biding My Time
- Interstellar Overdrive
- A Saucerful of Secrets

Meddle and Obscured By Clouds are both fan-fucking-tastic. Not a big fan of the stuff that preceded but there are a few odd tracks that are pretty cool....Point Me At the Sky, Astronomy Domine, Matilda Mother

Careful With That Axe, Eugene is one of my all time favorite songs. The version on Live at Pompeii is stunning.

it's quite good but i think that the visuals make it seem better than it is.
i prefer this version:
which is not their best but it's still way more ballsy.
