The albums with good songs have shitty production, and the albums with decent production have (mostly) shitty songs. Fatal combo.
I have the exact same problem with Bob Mould/Husker Du.
I have this problem with most music from the 80s tbh.
Do you like 80s or 90s R.E.M.?

REM, Talking Heads, and Tom Waits all have 80s albums that sound awesome.

I've always liked 90s REM (I was 14 when Monster came out), but it took a LONG time for their 80s albums to click with me.

Interesting, I'd say most Pearl Jam fans would be similar.

Also, I wouldn't expect a big Husker Du fan who was a teenager in the 80s to become a Pearl Jam fan.

I'm fully aware I'm in the vast minority here. I like one or two songs, but anything beyond that...

I like The Cure, but I mostly feel that way toward The Smiths.

Neither band is my cup of tea either. I don't know their catalogs very deeply but from what I know the surface elements just don't appeal to me.
