That's a really cool crane shot at the start. So far what I'm not getting in characters or emotional investment is made up for with a little bit of directorial flair.
What's with the choppy editing and ADR though

Dunno how I feel about the hyper desaturated look. I'm not sure it contributes much to the noir feel they're going for.

So 1940s Shanghai was really just Gotham City

A good 25% of this movie's production budget went to its Foley department

I really like Long Qi. I hope nothing bad happens to him.
Gotta pause right now. I'll finish the film and post my final thoughts tomorrow

Not sure if it was my study-mode mood or my lack of interest in most Kung Fu movies, but I gave up quite quickly with this. Will try give it another go at some point this week, but thought it was pretty damn slow to begin, and couldn't work out what the sepia toning was meant to achieve other than boring-up the visuals.

Re: RM Movie Club #1: Once Upon a Time in Shanghai
tonally this was all over the place and the pacing was odd...everything felt really underdeveloped
i agree with jorge that the desaturated look didn't seem to have the desired effect
the fight scenes were good and i enjoyed long qi, but overall i'd give this 2 lo meins out of 5

There are two weeks to watch the fucking movie. People are busy, they'll do it whenever they can.
