RM Movie Club #2: Quiz Show

My Selection is not really a surprise to anyone. It is currently is available on Netflix in the US. I have no idea if it is accessible outside the US streaming through legitimate sources. One of my favorite movies. It was a best picture nominee, but because it was nominated the same year as Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption it's usually forgotten. While I've always been a huge fan of this movie, it wasn't until recently I discovered that it's primary writer (paul attanasio) is one of the creators of Homicide: Life on the Street.

Quiz Show is a 1994 American historical film produced and directed by Robert Redford, and written by Paul Attanasio, based on Richard N. Goodwin's memoir Remembering America: A Voice From the Sixties. It stars John Turturro, Rob Morrow, and Ralph Fiennes, with Paul Scofield, David Paymer, Hank Azaria, and Christopher McDonald appearing in supporting roles.

The film chronicles the Twenty One quiz show scandals of the 1950s, the rise and fall of popular contestant Charles Van Doren after the rigged loss of Herb Stempel, and Congressional investigator Richard Goodwin's subsequent probe. Goodwin co-produced the film. The film received generally positive reviews and was nominated for several awards, including a Best Picture Oscar nomination and several Golden Globes.

Quiz Show is a really good movie.

It has wonderful performances (it's greatest strength) and an engaging, character-centric plot. I also love that it's heavy on inner conflict. The tension is subtle, at times surprising, and always effective. The movie is easily digestible (not a bad thing) and fairly straight forward. A lot like The Shawshank Redemption. It's A+ storytelling, but it's lack of visual language keeps it from elevating above many of the other films that came out in the early 90s. I adore the movie. It means a lot to me and I could watch it over and over and over again. But if it has a flaw, for me, it's that it isn't challenging enough, nor stylistically compelling enough to rise to the level of greatness.

Me too. 9 times out of 10 I prefer engaging, character-centric stories with lacking visuals to a beautiful, stylized, visual film that's less engaging and lacks interesting characters. Something like, To The Wonder, for example. Gorgeous film. But I just don't give a shit about the people or the story. Quiz Show is an infinitely better and more successful film.

I really enjoy Rob Morrow in this. It's surprising to me that he didnt have more movie success. But maybe he was a one trick pony.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.
