I agree but it always worked for me. Its a masterpiece...its tense, it rocks but at the same time its dark and heavy. Yeah, i can see it as a more introspective side of Grinderman.

Just giving Skeleton Tree my first run through. The song I Need You just bought some tears to my eyes.
I mentioned it before, but Nick's son who died was 15 - the same age as my son at the time. I just can't imagine the pain.

Its really, really good.
The title track is a stand out.

Re: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
After one listen, I really like this, but I definitely didn't find it to be the emotionally overwhelming tempest I expected it to be. Much of what I'm reading suggests that many of these songs predate the tragedy involving his son, and while it's certainly possible for the songs to be sort of retroactively informed by the experience, only in very few instances does it feel to me like Nick is directly addressing his own loss. The songs are kind of oblique so those things may come out more over time, but I thought I was going to be a weepy mess at the end of this, and instead I felt like I'd simply sat through a pretty great, dark perhaps but not atypically so Nick Cave album. I find this very much a companion piece to "Push the Sky Away."

Re: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Agree with KD's points. The overall theme of the record is certainly "loss" in some sense, but it's not like they're all directly referencing what happened to him personally. I think it's more interesting that way.
I haven't picked up the LP yet, but there are plenty of reports that it's a pretty bad pressing--lots of people receiving copies that are filthy or filled with pops, cracks, and distortions. That's sad to hear after all the excellent pressings of the old studio albums that came out over the past 2-3 years.

First impression: like most quieter Cave albums, this isn't doing much for me. I think the quasi-experimental nature of the music might actually make it worse, as it mostly just renders the songs melodically weak. Cave's voice...doesn't sound very good.

I need some more focused listens on this, and while I generally like it, I think it's fair to say that the first track is the best one by a biiiiiiiiig margin.

Is Abbatoir Blues super loudly mixed? Songs like Get Ready For Love or Hiding All Away hurt my ears.
