We really shouldn't be supporting their nomination. If they get inducted, suddenly they're a Legacy act and they'll start charging $250 a ticket to see them.

Corduroy would potentially be a better choice than GTF (maybe animal as well). I wonder about how songs whose identify has changed because of the crowd dynamics will sound as stand alone pieces. GTF is a good example of one that is a monster when you're there but may not come across as effectively as it might alone on a stage.bodysnatcher wrote:Yeah but it will be one of those moments where they haven't toured lately, and Ed's vocals will sound alright bc of it. And in the run up to that moment pearl jam will realise the very difficult truth that they became a party/celebration band rather than one with true weight and clout. I can't think of a single song they could play in that context that night.

Yeah, I can tell you who one of those people is. And I can tell you who that guy is because I've spent the better part of two decades obsessed with, reading about, writing about, listening to, and internet posting on a fucking Pearl Jam message board.Monkey_Driven wrote:Not exactly household names.tragabigzanda wrote:I'm gonna have to lean Team Spenno on this one. I actually love the idea of a fan inducting them. We should start a campaign. Pearl Jam loves campaigns.

Re: Vote for PJ in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations
This really isn't that difficult.
Pearl Jam would not be who they are today without Dave A, Jack, or Matt. Any of them. They all played fundamental roles in Pearl Jam's success, longevity, and/or legacy. Without each of them playing drums in the band at the time they did, we wouldn't all be sitting here on some message board talking about it. Take any of them away and that's the case.
Krusen gets there simply by performing on one of the most iconic rock albums of all time.
The only right answer is for all four of them to get individually inducted as part of Pearl Jam. Period.
Any other scenario is idiotic.
If Ed, Stone, Jeff, and Mike get to decide, than they should be ashamed if they don't take a stand for all four. I don't care how much they dislike Dave A, or what he did or didn't do in 1994. He was a core part of the Pearl Jam image and sound during their rise to fame.
If the RRHOF committee gets to decide, than fuck them for being idiots.

Re: Vote for PJ in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations
A very solid point made here. Imagine the alternate world, where the live touring culture didn't really take place. If they were an average live band who churned out the same setlist, and their appeal was strictly Ten and people's perception of a faded studio band. If you think they are considered second-banana to Nirvana now, it would be much much worse in this scenario. They would be treated at-best the way AIC is treated now (respected by some, but sort of relegated to a second tier). If they even got nominated on the first year of eligibility, they'd be a long shot. What got them to this new headline level, where they got nominated on the first year with no hesitance, is b/c they've validated their existence the hard way: grinding it out, year by year, album by album, tour by tour. Matt specifically is a major major piece of that. Most importantly, it gives us the fans the most credibility here. If they sputtered out around Binaural/Riot Act time, didn't have the whole fan-culture thing going for them, didn't headline the festivals and be a very successful touring act, they wouldnt be considered this year. Them being around they way they are now, and at the stature they are reminds everyone how huge of a deal they were before. People tend to forget these things unless there is a tragic death a la Kurt Cobain and Tupac Shakur. Kudos to them, and to us, for doing it the hard way. Well earned.Kevin Davis wrote:If Pearl Jam had simply faded away once Jack left the band, I don't think their induction would seem so inevitable -- they'd still be a big '90's rock band who had a run of a few good albums, but that describes a handful of bands who are eligible and haven't been nominated. Despite the fact that his name isn't on as many major records as the other guys, Matt's role in PJ's story shouldn't be diminished -- their ultimate legacy is as dependent on their reputation as a live juggernaut as it is on their records (perhaps more so), and he's been behind the kit for virtually all of that (their reputation was virtually the opposite of that prior to him joining the band). Leaving him out would be like the Dead leaving Brent Mydland out -- yeah, he wasn't on many of their better recordings**, but he was a definitive part of the experience for a lot of people who followed the band, especially at a time when the environment surrounding the band was more about the fan/event experience than whatever record they were promoting at the time.
**This is a generalization, of course -- personally I like at least two Matt records better than anything either Dave played on.

Re: Vote for PJ in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations
Ed has a huge boner for Jack Irons. If pearl jam had a say in this, jack would be inducted. If pj had a say it would only be jack and matt c. Clearly they do not have a say (initially). I hope they make a statement prior to the induction or at least invite them to play or do something.hlniv wrote:This really isn't that difficult.
