On the culture disparity thing, I'd say that you really don't see most of it when traveling. You have to live in a place and be a part of the population in order to really start to see what defines it. South Dakota, Omaha, Chicago, Phoenix, and Seattle all seem like variations of an American "type" when you visit. Stick around for a year or more, and nuanced differences become more clear...and their significance more evident.

I think the strangest place I lived was in Yuma, AZ. Half of the city lived there year-round and had to deal with change almost constantly because of the different populations: Snowbirds in the winter and tourists in the summer. It was a constant service industry coupled with the two military bases and it was strange to see how liberal and conservative everyone was at the same time. And it's not like they were moderate either, they just had enough change and upheavel and also a stolid life that was the same every day to be a little of everything.

I live in a very strange place. A mix of 1%ers, redneck conspiracy theorists, tree hugging hippies, and uneducated bro's who most likely dont have a college degree and are completely detached from politics.

I can safely support a third-party candidate that has a great shot of getting his 5%, which, as Argo (I think?) clarified earlier, will qualify the Libs for public funding ever forward, but won't directly get them into the debates (though presumably they could get there by polling higher numbers once they have tax dollars at their disposal).

I wouldn't vote this way if I lived in a swing state. But here in MT, it's not about "sticking it to the system" -- it's about increasing the dialogue going forward.
