FAN-MADE PROJECT - NOT FOR SALE

The recording sessions for No Code began in the midst of Pearl Jam's 'Sponsored By No One' Summer 1995 tour of non-Ticketmaster venues. It was a stressful year for the band - in addition to taking Ticketmaster to court, they were adjusting to playing with a new drummer in Jack Irons (who "saved the life of this band"), Ed was dealing with the aftermath of a "pretty intense stalker problem" (as described in 'Lukin'), and then there was the difficulty of touring far-flung make-shift venues with security and safety concerns (and subsequent cancelled shows), and a bout of food poisoning thrown in for good measure ('Red Mosquito').

As depicted in the PJ20 documentary, communication between the band was at an all-time low, with Ed often travelling separately to the rest of the group in the van set up to broadcast Monkeywrench radio sessions from the shows. Jeff Ament famously wasn't made aware the band was even recording until three days into the first No Code session at the Chicago Recording Company in July 1995. Following the Neil-Jam European tour in August (sans Ed), the band reconvened for a week at Kingsway Studio in New Orleans where they recorded the Young influenced 'Off He Goes'. Recording would not resume until January at Stone's Studio Litho, and include sessions back in Chicago and at producer Brendan O'Brien's base at Southern Tracks Recording in Atlanta. Jack Irons has remarked that this style of recording resulted in the band being "more on-the-fly" with many songs developing out of jam sessions.

While there were ongoing tensions over the creative process throughout the recording of the album (particularly between Jeff and Ed, resulting in Jeff walking out a one stage) the band's mood improved as they got closer to the end. Bandmembers attribute this to Irons who was "a big spiritual influence, if not the biggest" by encouraging them to discuss their problems and focus on the music. O'Brien stated that "everybody was on their best musical behavior around him". Vedder has said that "making No Code was all about gaining perspective", and it proved to be a transitional record for the band as they continued their retreat from the limelight.

While divisive at its time of release, No Code has become beloved by fans and it considered one of the most eclectic and well-produced albums in the band's catalogue. As such, no tweaking of remastering was deemed necessary for this deluxe edition, although there is an option to update the album with the '2016 HD Remaster for vinyl' by Bob Ludwig (who also mastered the original release).

This edition is expanded with all currently available outtakes, including the album's two B-sides and two covers recorded for compilations ('Gremmie Out Of Control' and 'Leaving Here'). 'All Night' appeared on an early promo poster for the album, but was not heard until the release of 'Lost Dogs' in 2003. 'Sunburn', sung by Stone, surfaced on a leaked 'Lost Dogs' production disc in 2007. The version of 'Don't Gimme No Lip' included here is also taken from this disc, as it is less harshly mastered than the version that appears on 'Lost Dogs'. Thanks once again goes to JWB for remastering the outtakes to ensure the sound quality is on par with that of the album. He also managed to splice the extended breakdown from the 'Lost Dogs' version of 'Black, Red, Yellow' into the superiorly mastered original version.

According to PearlJamOnline's Recording Sessions guide (http://www.pearljamonline.it/rs.htm) there are at least eight other outtakes that are yet to see the light of day, including early versions of 'Brain Of J' (which was played on the 1995 Summer tour) and 'Parting Ways'. A live version of one such track 'Falling Down' was released by the band on their 2010 Christmas single, and is included here in lieu of the unreleased studio version (which photos from the 'Lost Dogs' artwork suggest was agonised over by the band before being abandoned).

**As per the other Deluxe Editions I've put together, this set will be updated should any new recordings surface.
