This supposed MYM clip is not what I'd really like to hear from PJ anymore. The first part of the video, with the more ambient instrumental is where they should explore. They should've rolled a fat one before each session and cranked out their own two-disc "Wall-like" concept album. It's time for an album full of Immortality's and NAIS and Present Tense's!

It might have all that on it as well, in which case I'm happy with the heavy stuff. If what we're hearing is MYM, I'd rather have this kind of heavy than Life Wasted or, at the risk of annoying fans of it by mentioning it again, Big Wave. I'd probably rather this to Comatose too. Basically, this is heavy but not punk, which is basically something different for new PJ (and more akin to old PJ). The only potential problem might be that this song is to 'Go' what 'Amongst the Waves' is to... GTF, Alive, Dissident, i.e. a similar song which pales in comparison. If they go different places with it, if they fuck around with the structure a little, we might get something more interesting. Hard to tell.

Yeah it's really hard to know what to make of this song clip so far. Honestly though I've liked their harder/uptempo stuff the past couple of albums. My only issues have been the lyrics mostly.

Yeah, I'm into those clips. But they do sound a little thin to me. Not that that's indicative of what they'll sound like should they in fact be on the new album.

I like what Matt's doing there, but the clip is too short to leave any significant impression about the sound. Really dig the playing, however. Everything in that clip tickled my fancy.

Pj do that atmospheric dark side Eno thing quite well I always thought. The first piece we hear is really encouraging. Hope it's on the record.
I can hear echoes of Go in the faster one. No bad thing. Sorta sounds kinda metal. Almost like old soundgarden?

Indeed. I've only heard it on my phone so I don't hear the drums as weak. They sound pretty beefy to me.

No, sorry, I mean Riot Act was the last album I was 100% happy with drum-sound wise. The problem here is basically the same problem as S/T; there's no resonance on the snare drum (or the bass drum); they're flat, like cardboard. I also don't like Matt's obsession with the ride cymbal, I think it takes away from the heaviness of the song. I'm a traditionalist in that I like it when heavy rock thrashes around on the hi-hat. Matt seems to be loathe to do that, strangely. Incidentally, this was an issue I had with the recorded version of You Are for a while -- that Matt didn't open the hi-hat during the choruses -- but I decided it was OK due to its uniqueness, and that maybe it wasn't trying to be the giant rock song I thought. Maybe that's true of this one as well?

Who was it that mentioned GY!BE? I can hear that in the atmospheric first track, and it's got me wondering whether, when Mike (?) called the new music "experimental", he might've been referring to a post-rock style. If there was an obvious contemporary style for PJ to try next, post-rock might be it.

No, sorry, I mean Riot Act was the last album I was 100% happy with drum-sound wise. The problem here is basically the same problem as S/T; there's no resonance on the snare drum (or the bass drum); they're flat, like cardboard. I also don't like Matt's obsession with the ride cymbal, I think it takes away from the heaviness of the song. I'm a traditionalist in that I like it when heavy rock thrashes around on the hi-hat. Matt seems to be loathe to do that, strangely. Incidentally, this was an issue I had with the recorded version of You Are for a while -- that Matt didn't open the hi-hat during the choruses -- but I decided it was OK due to its uniqueness, and that maybe it wasn't trying to be the giant rock song I thought. Maybe that's true of this one as well?

Yeah I remember hearing the intro to Severed Hand and thinking holy crap! and then the whole feel changes when the song really starts... I love that song but still....I would have liked to see a song with that intro carrying the same tone all the way through.

I was happier with Backspacer, because although there wasn't that 'roominess' / resonance on the drums, like there had been on Riot Act, the sound was (deliberately) so polished, shiny and poppy, that I expected a flat drum sound. You wouldn't expect a Taylor Swift song, for example, to have the most innovative and striking drum sound. It's got to do the job, that's all. I loved a lot of choices Matt made in his playing on Backspacer, though, and not so much S/T. Lots of stuff he did (or didn't do) on S/T kind of annoyed me. Add to that the fact that the drums on S/T *should've* sounded more live, more roomey, and I guess I was doubly unhappy with it. If MYM (assuming that's what this is) is meant to be a blistering, aggressive hard rock song, then 'Go's drums were mixed fucking perfectly, these ones aren't. But if there are unusual and unexpected movements in this song (like in You Are), and it's structurally more than a heavy rock song, I'll be OK with this drum sound. I'm not sure if *that* makes any sense...

I love the first instrumental. Whatever that is being bowed sounds great. Strings like this are fine by me.
