It's a completely different situation, the Bruins sucked when they made the Thornton trade. Thornton had been here for like 8 years already. This is a championship contender trading it's best young player just about at the exact time he's going to start breaking out.philpritchard wrote:You guys have justified the absolutely horrendous return the Bruins got for Joe Thornton because of the domino effect it had and the salary it cleared up, but you don't see the value in the cap space, impact player and prospects they got for Seguin?

Unless after watching him practice and play the last 3 years everyday they dont feel like he's going to "break out."

Of course the situations are different. The return on the Thornton trade was in no way appropriate to where the team stood at the time. The return on the Seguin trade is. They're trading him for a player who's currently better than he is. For a championship contender, that's a good move.numbers wrote:It's a completely different situation, the Bruins sucked when they made the Thornton trade. And, really, "trading its best young player just about at the exact time he's going to start breaking out" is exactly how I would describe the trade of a 6'4", 26-year-old who's in the process of becoming the best playmaking center in the NHL, winning an Art Ross Trophy and leading the league in assists the next three years.

Re: NHL Thread
Thornton was already one of the best players in the league, he had played for Canada in the Olympics and his great year with the Sharks was a result of him being motivated for the first time and playing with much better offensive talent around him than ever before in a offense oriented system for the first time. How is Erikkson better than Seguin right now? At best, they are equal, but Seguin has put up better point totals the past two seasons. Seguin isnt as atrocious in his own end as everyone makes him out to be. The biggest difference is that Erikkson is at his peak as a player and Seguin is still years away from that. I thought Seguin(much like Jagr,) was basically pretty good in the playoffs he just wasnt scoring any goals.philpritchard wrote:Of course the situations are different. Rask must be in for a much bigger payday than I expected, they are talking about needing to visit the Savard Credit Union to be able to fit him under the cap.

That just kind of hammers home the point of how bad that trade was. He was already one of the best players in the league, and he got better when he left.numbers wrote:Thornton was already one of the best players in the league, he had played for Canada in the Olympics and his great year with the Sharks was a result of him being motivated for the first time and playing with much better offensive talent around him than ever before in a offense oriented system for the first time.
I'm not great at math or anything, but I didn't realize 97 points was more than 100. And Seguin doesn't have to be atrocious in his own end to be miles and miles behind the defensive value that Eriksson provides. Aaaand the fact that Eriksson is at his peak should also be viewed as a positive for a team that has an outstanding chance to win a couple Cups in the next few years.numbers wrote:How is Erikkson better than Seguin right now? Boston is in win now mode. I love that. Win now with young talent. I actually like that the NHL has a meaningful salary cap and hard decisions need to be made.philpritchard wrote: Aaaand the fact that Eriksson is at his peak should also be viewed as a positive for a team that has an outstanding chance to win a couple Cups in the next few years.

you're on a roll, numbers. savard's money was always going to come off the books thru LTIR, no one should see it as any new development whatsoever.numbers wrote:Rask must be in for a much bigger payday than I expected, they are talking about needing to visit the Savard Credit Union to be able to fit him under the cap.

I cant remember where I read it, but I remember reading that the team had to reach the salary cap before they could use a LTIR exemption. The reason I said what I said about Rask was that if that is true he's getting alot more than the 6.5 I thought he would end up around.elliseamos wrote:that's news to me. everything i've read/heard about the bruins plans, assumes savard's on LTIR. just like the flyers & pronger.numbers wrote:I thought they couldnt touch it until they reached the cap?elliseamos wrote:you're on a roll, numbers. savard's money was always going to come off the books thru LTIR, no one should see it as any new development whatsoever.numbers wrote:Rask must be in for a much bigger payday than I expected, they are talking about needing to visit the Savard Credit Union to be able to fit him under the cap.

Re: NHL Thread
I was thinking the Bruins got a bit weaker up front with the Seguin trade, but adding Iginla brings them right back to the same level. I think your D is where some questions remain. Some of the younger guys will have to step up and then Boston is right back in contention this year.
Wings got better.
Sens got better (plus having a healthy Karlson and Spezza)
Leafs got better (or at least harder to play against)
The new Northeast+Florida division is easily the toughest in the league.

I think Boston is a little weaker on the back end and may be relying a little too heavily on their young trio of Krug, Hamilton and Bartkowski (maybe even Morrow). I would have prefered to see them sign a d-man rather than Iginla. I can see Julien overplaying Chara all season and a drop in his effectiveness. I'm sure we'll see a deadline deal for a d-man but you almost always over pay for a d-man near the trade deadline.southp wrote:I was thinking the Bruins got a bit weaker up front with the Seguin trade, but adding Iginla brings them right back to the same level. Up front, they should be banking on their core just hitting their prime in Krejci, Bergeron and Eriksson. Lucic has to have a bounce back year and Marchand should still be improving. Iginla will be effective in the regular season but can't see him doing naything come the playoffs. Soderberg seems like a bit of a step up on Peverley and Reilly Smith provides a bit of bench depth.
Now they just need to resign Rask.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

Man, Seguin is getting killed here in Boston. Bruins snitches have aired the dirty laundry.
Something about how they had to have a guard outside his hotel room so that he wouldn't leave to party.
Something about how he wore the same clothes for three days during the Toronto series, suggesting he was partying non-stop.
Like everything, the truth is probably somewhere in-between it all.

Re: NHL Thread
I think Seguin getting traded was a 50-50 mix of his inconsistent development and his off-ice behaviour. The difference between Seguin and Kane (as was previously compared) is that Kane still puts up the numbers despite his antics.
p.s. For anyone who watched the finals on CBC it makes me laugh to think about how much Don Cherry was praising Seguin as a "Boston beauty" right before he guaranteed a game-6 win. Now his precious Bruins lost the cup and his Canadian boy was traded for a Swede of all things!

I think most of the stories have been debunked. I think their just trying to cover their asses for next season when Seguin puts up 80-90 points and Ericksson only puts up 20-25 goals playing in the abyss known as Julien's system.Coach wrote:Man, Seguin is getting killed here in Boston. Re: NHL Thread
The abyss of Julien's system?? Really!! A cup win, another finals appearance within a three year span and you call that an abyss. That system has about the best puck possession numbers in the league, so if Jagr, Seguin and a few others can't score it's not the system. I realize Julien's puck possession system does not work for everyone but if the abyss helps to let me compete for the cup then as a player I'd welcome the abyss.shinkdew wrote:I think most of the stories have been debunked. Yes, Seguin will rack up more points in Dallas. He'll also never have to worry about his nightlife behavior in the month's of May and June affecting his play.
