They should be shamed. If you think gays shouldnt be married, You are dumb. if you deny climate change, You are dumb. If you think college educated people are just elitist know it alls, you are dumb. If you think Jesus will resurrect and walk this earth, you are dumb.

But I wish middle America would get on board with the rest of the country/industrialized world. Put your bibles down. Get educated. Learn new skills. Evolve.
I'm not sure that's how they see it, Strat. I think they're feeling more like, "We shouldn't have to go to college to earn a living wage, but our industrial/blue-collar jobs have all gone away." Your advice to "get educated, learn new skills, and evolve" disregards the realities of their situations: that a higher education isn't something they can, or perhaps want, to make happen, and they're getting left in the dust. I think this is the definition of the liberal culpability mentioned earlier.
"...or perhaps want"

These are the same people that often deny more tax dollars towards local education. Thats my point.

Its evolution, baby?
Right -- they may not want to take on debt (personally, or via taxes) to pursue higher education, and I don't think they should have to. This is where free trade comes in. So many industrialized jobs have gone to other countries with lower wages, more lax environmental regs, and shitty labor laws. They want those jobs back. I don't think that's a dumb or outdated desire, and I totally get why Trump's (empty) promise to bring those job back is compelling to them.
I have thoughts about this but none of them are coming out properly right now. Tis not the time to try and respond as im watching football.

Im about to start reading Deer Hunting With Jesus. Perhaps ill have a better understanding.

I believe education is important. I do not believe that college is the only avenue to getting educated. i do believe learning and developing skill sets and growing along with the rest of the world (evolving) is important. It is an international stage now (the technology argument). The world is changing and we need to adapt.

Wrong attitude, bud. Apart from the racists/deplorables, I don't think there are any dumb voters out there right now. There are vast and growing inequalities in our country , and we're all angry and scared that we haven't been presented with a candidate who offers good ideas on how to address them.
Really?

tragabigzanda wrote:Strat, my point is that you seem to be looking down on the Trump supporters, and I totally get it -- I have those feelings too sometimes. But that attitude is just going to further the divide. The ideal candidate would be one who could have addressed both ends of the spectrum (the highly educated and affluent, and the uneducated and poor), and then made a case for boosting the middle class in such a way as to pull the poor people up, and keep the rich people happy and comfortable. Neither of the candidates have done that, and so we're all forced to vote for Divisive Platform #1 or Divisive Platform #2.
Im looking down on a majority of trump supporters. Not all.

it is amazing how healthcare seems to escape the masses with the torches and pitchforks

shitting on the affordable care act is about as close as people come

this whole election is a waste; not only because of the trump stuff, but because nearly no policies have been discussed outside of generalities regarding hatred toward international trade agreements

imagine if this person stood in front of a Wells Fargo; and used their iPhone to secure a mortgage through another bank, but then Wells Fargo sent them a bill for $7400 ?

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/201 ... ll-florida

people would be cue-ing up the bank-bashing montage and elizabeth warren would be smearing some CEO and all the 'progressives' would be clamoring for criminal charges. and they wouldn't necessarily be wrong, either.

so why does the medical industry always get a pass? because 'science' ? 'science is magic'? we're so god damn ignorant of the cost structure to inspect a stool sample that we are OK with sitting at home afterward waiting for the bill to arrive, and having no idea whether it will be for $80, or $800 ? And then when it's $800, going 'ah fuck - but there's nothing I can do about it. you know, science. science is magic.'

no one seem to grasp the implications of healthcare inflation. Massive numbers of people will be unable to retire; or healthcare costs in retirement will send people into bankruptcy.

I don't care about email servers, groping, or benghazi. I want to be able to go to a doctor and not be charged $1,200 to check my hearing; because $1,200 is an unfair price.

And I wish other people would wake up and stand against that too.

Healthcare is one of the major reasons I suspect whoever wins this election will get trounced by double digits in four years.

tragabigzanda wrote:McP, thanks for the explanation. You always offer a lot of facts and figures, so I have to assume you've done your homework and know what you're talking about. But I want to add that a lot of the changes the middle class are grappling with are rooted in international trade deals that take advantage of weaker economies, rather than technological advances. I know those changes are coming -- drones, automated process, advances that require specific knowledge of new sciences or processes -- but there is still a lot of 20th century-type industrialized work happening, and it's happening in other parts of the world, and a large amount of Trump's supporters want those jobs back. To what extent those people male up Trump's base, I couldn't say.
Printing these books in China has been kinda eye opening. I know infrastructure and modern equipment are two factors, but I gotta think slave labor and lax regulations are mostly to blame for it being thousands of dollars cheaper to print halfway around the world, to the point where printing in America isn't possible anymore. I guess it is still something of a technology problem, though, because we now have the technology to take advantage of literally billions of desperate Asians to make stuff, but eventually technology will make them obsolete as well. Then what?

I just did an online quiz - 'Which US Presidential candidate are you?'

I'm apparently
40% Clinton
20% Trump
40% Johnson

Funny thing is - I thought I'd be more Trump than the results came back with
