I don't expect them to be great, per se. But I think they could do another Avocado-quality effort if they were so inclined.

I'd like an angry and roughly produced effort from them along the lines of Living With War. All spit, no polish.

They probably sat out this election because they didn't want to alienate the part of their base that loves Trump.

And that's why modern Pearl Jam is so disappointing to me.

Yeah no statements or activism that I can recall from PJ this cycle.

They are going to have to rush this to get it out this year.

Which means first sessions full of 3 years worth of demos/song ideas then 3-6 months later another session which because the songs are fresher will take precedence.

If Ed defaults to banal sloganeering, it might even be worse.

I think this is more of a risk with Ed's solo acoustic stuff -- Ed being passionate about domestic and world affairs has usually fared better for Pearl Jam's music than his present-day complacency, though admittedly a conservative president combined with Ed's current flip-flop philosopher "vibes" could produce a Frankenstein's monster unlike anything the Jamily has ever seen.
