But if he did say what was on his mind: "If it pleases the gentleman from New York, the president-elect, Mr. Trump: listen you fucking fascist, cock-sucking motherfucker. You wanna mess with the Bern? You're gonna be shitting blood after my cock is done with you. I'm from Brooklyn, motherfuckers!"

Can you give me an example of what you mean? What groups, exactly, are suddenly 'on limits'?Orpheus wrote:
Allow me to rebutt: it's easy to not be hysterical when you are in the one group that is considered "off limits" to the new regime. Other people have very good reasons to be terrified.
Well, since I am basically the only person in this thread who was willing to see Trump voters as humans whose lives have value, even if I think their politics is disgusting, I would turn that question and ask if you understand a lack of empathy for their plight is what allows the Trumps of the world to use them to gain power.bune wrote: Do you even know what empathy is?

Re: Election 2016
This is where my wife and I basically are today. We work with a lot of young people (college kids), and plenty of our students are people of color, immigrants, the children or siblings of undocumented immigrants, Muslims, refugees, queer or gender-non-conforming, gay, trans, disabled, etc. etc. and so on and so forth. Basically coming from all the stripes that Trump has either mocked, demeaned, or threatened. Our starting point is just going to be to ask them how they feel, and not to trivialize any fear or anxiety they might have, but to also somehow emphasize that the majority of Americans don't want to deport them or their families, don't want to force them back into the closet, or don't want to label them as dangerous potential insurgents. It's a fine line to walk, though, and I feel like it's not my place to say, "Don't worry," since nothing happening because Trump is really just an empty shell who goes the way the wind blows is really just one possible outcome.@SkitchP wrote:I think.. and this is not said in anyway to diminish the fear of minorities or women or anyone else, and their justifications for it.
and ive said this since the primaries. In a lot of ways, a president like Donald Trump is less scary than a guy like Ted Cruz or any of the other evangelical tea party types. If anything, his history of flip flops to gain popularity and appeal to a specific movement is far more encouraging than someone who always feels like he is answering to god or an inflexible set of ideals. for a lot of the social issues this is a very good thing- gay rights, abortion, etc. Even gun rights and things like that. Especially if he wants a shot a second term. The dems are going to spend the next 4 years trying to push the perfect candidate. He can be... convinced to change his opinion on those things and isn't beholden to the current republican norms. Obviously the outright bigotry and misogyny mitigate the possible positives of that, but thats where hopefully the existing power structures are able to stop him from succeeding in his more outlandish promises- the wall, banning muslims, etc.

Uh-huh. It's been a tradition for years for the sitting president to invite their successor over for a visit shortly after the election.cutuphalfdead wrote:Or they respect the process enough to concede defeat and commit to a peaceful transition.

And the divergence in the polling could be the result of a lot of things, and the absolute bottom of the list includes things like "voting machines being hacked" or "Putin erasing people's little bubbles and writing in Trump's." I wouldn't be surprised if it was some sort of under-sampling that didn't reach far enough into the rural counties in places like Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Michigan, and assuming that the Latino vote in Florida was all for Clinton---Cubans are a much more complex voting demographic.Simple Torture wrote:Uh-huh. Exactly. Trump is the President-elect and deserves all of the respect the office commands.cutuphalfdead wrote:What's there to cry foul over? Trump won.
Reacting with righteous anger, "keep up the fight!", etc. is a one-way ticket to further irrelevancy. This should be a time for humility and reflection.

I mean, democratic ideals aren't irrelevant. Over half of the population voted for them. But yes, i agree.

Re: Election 2016
I'm about to start a post with the same phrase for the 2nd time in two days: trag, I love you. I really do. But there's never, ever been a high-volume case of voter fraud even attempted in this country, and I doubt that in the days of on-demand media and 24-hour coverage that something like this could sneak through with absolutely no evidence. An under-sampling of rural whites and an over-sampling of urban blacks/Latinos seems to easily explain the poll's miss, and that's all tied up in the complexities of how polls are done these days vs how they used to be done (online and automated vs. over-the-phone and person-to-person) and how it's pretty obvious, from exit polls, that Trump was able to energize his party's base but Clinton couldn't do it for hers. Polling overall was actually pretty good--it looks like the popular vote estimates were closer this year than they were for Obama in '12--but that one-to-two-point shift downward was enough to swing a dozen or so states from red-to-blue or into even redder territory.tragabigzanda wrote:Yea, I'm not saying this isn't the more likely scenario. Re: Election 2016
The notion that continuing the fight will lead to further irrelevancy doesn't make much sense, as there's not really any sign that opposition to Trump is minuscule enough to be irrelevant. More people voted for Clinton than Trump. That's not me decrying the Electoral College or anything; everyone knew the rules going into the election. But let's not pretend we're not talking about Reagan/Mondale here. The country couldn't be more evenly split.Strat wrote:I mean, democratic ideals aren't irrelevant. Yeah, you give him a chance to do what he wants to do to make the country safer, more prosperous, whatever. But considering the tenor of his campaign, I don't think it's overblown to keep a close eye on his approach to civil liberties and human rights.Birds in Hell wrote:Exactly. Re: Election 2016
Just like the Brexit result this shows how disillusioned people are with the current state of 1st world politics. HRC on paper is the perfect president. If it was a job interview she would be over qualified if that was possible. But years and years of concessions of her behalf have moulded her as the generic politician, seeming to be steered by self interest and self preservation. Samantha Bee hit the nail on the head when she spoke of her changing her name to Clinton was a concession to further Bill's career. Having a strong wife was seen as a weakness for him. That seems so absurd now. Michelle Obama's strength is Barrack's strength.
