The capacity of this board and the American public at large to victim blame, gaslight, and just generally be shitty to their fellow human beings will never cease to amaze me.
I made it very clear that I was NOT saying this AT ALL.

I know you're running hot right now, but please calm down and actually read what you're responding to before jumping on people.

I think it has more to do with distrust of the media then anything. To give you a local example that we deal with every year..

Every year, the night before Halloween is referred to as Devils Night. To most it means teens throwing eggs, or light vandalism. For a couple years in the 80s and 90s it turned into a night where massive numbers of Arsons would occur in the city of Detroit.

At some point in the late 90's the communities mobilized and it became a police focus.. and the Arsons dropped dramatically.

But they still report things like "There were 7 fires in the city of detroit on Devils night!"

all the while failing to report that on a normal night there is 15. (#'s made up as an example).

That is not saying that these stories are fake, or diminishing their impact. But they could be coincidental to the election Donald Trump, and were just as likely to occur on 11/7 as they are on 11/10. To simply tie every hate crime that occurs post election TO the election is short sighted and misleading.

OK, LV, I'll quote you directly. They're "absurdly overstated?" What is the appropriate way to talk about hate crimes?

A rash of hate crimes following the election of a man who was openly supported by hate groups seems pretty A----->B to me you guys.

Okay, I'll also quote me directly:
LoathedVermin72 wrote:the narrative being created - that there is some widespread, nation-consuming pandemic of hate crimes happening because of Trump being elected - seems absurdly overstated.
This is a falsely exaggerated narrative. As I said, I do not doubt that horrible, disgusting incidents are occurring. But I don't believe for one second that they are as commonplace as it is being portrayed right now, especially since so many of the ones being pointed to as examples seem so patently fake.

Vast majority of these are real and confirmed. Judge for yourself, seems like an epidemic to me.

There are like ten examples in that article and there are more than 320 million people living in this country. Like I said, I do not doubt incidents are occurring. That seems inevitable in the wake of a hatemonger like Trump being elected. But that article hardly constitutes an epidemic.

Friends of mine with the pride flag outside their house just had swatikas sprayed on their door and windows broken.

America is built on systemic racism that we may never overcome. But this kind of media sensationalism only exacerbates things.

I think it's about time these things are in the forefront. These conversations need to be had and this shit needs to be bred out.

It's been at the forefront for several years now, and white America elected Trump because of it. I am becoming less convinced it's ever going to be "bred out" at this point.

There's an element of truth to this to. Another albeit trivial local story a couple years ago. Some kids let the air out of the tires of all the school buses at the bus yard, and school had to be cancelled.

They put this story on the news. Within the following week, the same thing happened at another half dozen bus yards. Sometimes oversensationalizing things, or making them seem like they are widespread make others think they're going to get away with it.

Skitch, did you let the air out of your tires so you could spend time at home with your kids? :heartbeat:
