The reality, of course, is that what happened does not fit into a media-ready soundbite like "Trump voters are racist", "Hillary is a woman" or "Forgotten Middle America".

The reality is a complex mixture of some or all of the soundbites being thrown around:

A big portion of Americans (of people) are racist, are sexist, are bigoted in some way, and Trump legitimised their views.

An even larger percentage of people are ignorant, and can easily be made scared by the threat of the other.

A big portion of Trump voters are rural working class people who have been left behind by policies that logically, but somewhat blindly, favour cities, where 80% of the population live - a number that will still grow.

A significant portion of democrat voters stayed home compared to Obama, likely due to lack of enthusiasm for Hillary (and some of that aforementioned inbuilt sexism).

Third party voters and spoilt ballots, on balance, probably would've tipped it back toward Hillary.

Etc, etc.

I have no doubt that many Trump voters are fine people. But in practice their vote has emboldened a lot of awful people, and they seem to be largely in denial of that.

You raise an interesting question here about political 'game theory'. Is it that they are in denial of of it or do they not consider it as important as the other things they believe Trump brings to the Presidency?

The trump won cos ordinary people are sick of being lectured by libtards and libtard media narrative has already become nauseating.

Ordinary folk don't generally pay attention to that stuff but it's more frightening that they have once again voted Republican candidate and congress without somehow realising they're the ones that Fuck them over hardest every time. All with the promises of free gun ownership and empty promises about just about everything else.

I mentioned it to trag a few pages ago and it may have been buried, but I can't emphasize it enough: this is exactly what people said after Bush II was elected.

"He's a doofus, an empty suit that gets told what to do behind the scenes; no way he'll be re-elected!"

"He has no substance and doesn't understand the nuances of policy; no way he'll get re-elected!"

"We're in the middle of two costly wars that are getting worse by the month; no way he'll get re-elected!"

Since 1932, there have only been 2 purely one-term presidents (so LBJ and Ford not included in that count). Incumbency matters a great deal.

Well that's true.

I don't know why and have no basis in fact for saying this but I don't see Trump completing his first term. Won't be anything violent or anything. Just see him saying I can't do it or stepping down a year or two into it and letting Pence take over. Which is the very worst possible outcome.


Again, no idea why I think that but it's just feeling that way. I don't believe he ever wanted to really win this. Pics of him as the results come in, he looks depressed. Pence is sitting beside him clapping and crying.

Here we are though. Let's see.

This is true, although the hand-wringing in the Democratic party is a little overblown, albeit understandable considering the upset. They had a diverse and large enough coalition of different voters that they won the popular vote and came within a spitting distance of the White House, and did so with a candidate with an awful lot of baggage. If they keep the voters they have this time, they have to swing a view of the Rust Belt voters that went for Trump in WI, MI, and PA and/or boost turnout in the cities and they have the White House again. Better outreach to those Trump voters can help, but to completely try to remake their party as it existed under Obama would be a mistake.

Two interesting things I've seen this morning:

1. A petition to have the electoral college casts their votes differently on 12/19:

2. A number of sites are running articles on the likelihood that the GOP impeaches Trump so they can have a party-line Pence in the oval office instead. And this is interesting:

I'm not suggesting either of these will come to pass (at least not #1), but I think Trump's role as POTUS is going to face more challenges from within his own party than he's anticipated.

The first one is a fucking joke. If anything, you may have one or two electors throw up a Bernie Sanders protest vote to add insult to injury for Clinton.

The second one has some interesting game theory for the Democrats. If Trump does (or did?) something universally repulsive, such as sexual misconduct or business fraud, then the decision to impeach is easy. But if it's merely Trump being incompetent, the Dems might have an incentive not to impeach so that Trump hangs the GOP in the 2020 election.

That Politico article looks interesting, but it's long so I'll have to take some time to read before any comments.
