Just read some of the Twitter responses to Oprah's "Hope Lives" remark... what fucking planet are these people on? Should have taken my own advice but I figure if Oprah would say "we can be unified and make this work", progressives would listen.

The irony here is that only Trump can create the calm she's talking about. If you are a Dreamer, an environment voter, or a member of the LGBT community (among others), this is a president who has expressed an interest in doing things that could cause irreparable harm in terms of its impact on you. If he were to begin talking about his actual plans as president, and if they were deeply tempered in the way his rhetoric about Obama has become, then you'd see a lot of calming down.

If Hillary had won on a platform that vowed to take all guns away, and to place the name of anyone owning more than 5 on a public "dangerous peoples" list, I wouldn't expect or try to scold gun owners to play nice about it, either.

Yup. The amount of good that could be done with a 3 minute "stop the hate" speech would go a long way.

Look, protesters are generally an irritant at the best of times, however it's difficult to have any degree of indulgence for a bunch of morons protesting against the clear winner of a fair, democratic vote. There are people in the world who I'm sure would gladly protest for the right to free elections, etc.

It will surprise no one to learn that I was one of the morons.

Being in the US for this election day was one of the strangest things I've ever experienced, especially coming right in the middle of a fun-filled vacation. The people around me were absolutely despondent, stricken with this all-consuming sense of loss. And I can sort of understand why; for many of them, 60 million people just told them "we don't care about your kind here". Of course that's not literally what happened, but it's how it feels to them while the wound is still fresh, and it's hard to discount that. The (perceived) legitimization of the uglier side of Trump's rhetoric and base is a hell of a gut punch. I still find it hard to process.

Taking to the streets in show of protest* is a right guaranteed by the US Constitution, and is sacrosanct in any truly free democracy. I know it's probably been years since you felt passionately about anything, but surely you can begin to understand why people-- especially marginalized folks who feel like their family or their rights are directly in jeopardy under this new administration-- would march out to air their grievances. Even if it doesn't accomplish anything on a practical sense beyond perhaps a measure of catharsis. Or sending a message to the president-elect that, should he follow through with the more outrageous policies he ran on, the people will not take it lying down.

*when done peacefully, as it was in my experience; I can't defend the violence in other demonstrations.

That's not liberals, that's Lena Dunham. She's repulsive on her own.

I'n having some sort of late-onset depression over this election. When it first happened, I was somehow able to gather enough information that I could understand the causes, where to allocate various feelings, etc. I was even happy and upbeat all day yesterday. But today... I'm just feeling pretty hopeless. All the liberal voices getting the headlines with their opinions -- Lena Dunham, Ethan Coen, etc -- are just killing me with their privileged opinions. And all my loved ones (family and friends) are back on Instagram sharing pictures of their food, going to watch movies, etc. It's like I'm watching the liberals react, and though I know there are some protests and calls to action beginning to take shape, there are way to many people wringing their hands or just tuning out.

Yup. Now take that and add in reading Stephen King's Bazaar of Bad Dreams and you have my state of mind. What a depressing book to read this week.

I can't remember the title but there's a book out there somewhere that goes into what would happen to the United States if all illegal immigrant workers didnt turn up for work for just one day. The entire country would judder to a halt.

Of course but Trumps policies are far more aggressive than Obama's. I dont think most americans have a problem with controlling immigration but building a wall, punishing children of parents who are here illegally, and having muslims register are far more radical and facist in nature.

People are upset about that and the perceived (rightfully perceived ) threats of certain liberties that have been granted will now be swiped away by people like Trump and especially Mike Pence.

He just said something about how he knows this stuff because "construction". He said that in most areas a fence is reasonable but some absolutely a big wonderful wall.
