10th album rumors and speculation

It was me that made the comment about ride cymbals being all the rage to Mr. Cameron. It's a weakness to me. I would rather have Dave A's over-obsession with the entire 12 cymbals he had, any day of the week. He had some skillz in terms of finding his way over a lot of different sounds. I'm not sure I've ever heard Matt play a splash cymbal or a china.

Yeah, even from that small snippet I couldn't avoid thinking how Dave A. would play that section.

Yea, that's what I want to know? I think some people are referring to the dinner plate symbol but I wouldn't consider that artwork that has anything to do with the album.

I would bet what little money I have that this is MYM single artwork, to be fully revealed by Thursday in conjunction with the song.

I had outsized expectations for yesterday, as did almost everyone. That was on PJ. On the other hand, now I'll enjoy the slower reveal. They are forcing foreplay on us. It sucks if you really want sex right now, but you probably wont' regret it when it is over.

(this is not me being an apologist for the band. I just think people's reactions to events should be commensurate to what actually happened). Yesterday was hardly an unqualified success. But there was some cool stuff there and, having slept on it, it was hardly a huge failure either.

It's reassuring to know that there's at least 1 voice of reason here. Word.

I feel better about yesterday but it was still a "Huge" letdown. If we get the single this week then no harm done I suppose.
The mystery artwork as well as song snippets had a redeeming quality. Personally, I think an EPK (or whatever you call them) alone would have fully justified the week long countdown.

The way Dave A opened the hats was so explosive. He really influenced my playing to the point that I own 2 splashes. And I tend to go to the hat on the 8th or 16th of a snare roll.

I remember being a kid (also influenced by Dave A. growing up) and suddenly tweaking that splash cymbals rarely sound good on the first beat of a bar (except on a quieter verse, never to transition from a soft bit to a loud bit) and should not replace the crash. From then on I would use them for subtle texture and colour, and usually on an off-beat. Dave taught me that

I'm not sure I've ever heard Matt play a splash cymbal or a china. He seems more keen on rides and cowbells... which... doesn't suit Pearl Jam and never really has.

Matt uses both a splash and a china at different points on Binaural.
I'm pretty sure he's never used a cowbell. I think there's cowbell overdubbed in The Fixer, but it's not part of the whole kit and may not even be him playing it.

Fair points, and yeah there was splash and china in Binaural... something as small as that might make it my favourite drumming album from Matt. On the whole I didn't go WTF through any of it, and I usually do. My biggest WTF's have been in You Are ("Why aren't you smashing the hi-hats at this point; closed, ALL THE WAY THROUGH?") and probably Severed Hand (again, closed hi-hats until near the end.

I appreciate Blenheim's point that his influences (namely Copeland) steer clear of rock cliches. Maybe I feel that PJ as a band don't, so it's a mismatch when he does. The Police as an entirety steered away from the cliches; they were heavily influenced by ska (and influenced ska in turn) and maybe I just feel that PJ as a whole are nowhere near as innovative, so I'd rather Matt just did what I expect. Like the bitch that he is.

I agree with you about the closed high-hat. I think it makes PJ sound too stiff. The loose high-hat would give it more flow. This has been a big complaint of mine for years about "Faithfull" live. During t,he "echoes" part Matt closes the high-hit. On the album, the cymbals are ringing, and to these ears, it sounds brilliant; live, that part is stiff.

I disagree however, about the ride. From that snippet at the end of the tour video, the guitar / drum (snare/kick) thing sound great, then the ride cymbal (dome/bell part) kicks it up a notch. It reminds me somewhat of the 3:50 to 4:04 part of "Jesus Christ Pose", which I personally think is Matt Cameron at his absolute best.

I wouldn't mind if the band jumped to Avocado as the next remaster, and put some fixin on it. I want NC > RA too, but S/T needs the most work.
