The DAPL and the standoff at Standing Rock

Post by Stickman »

Long and short of it is that Dallas based Energy Transfer Partners want to lay pipe under the Missouri River, potentially contaminating the main water source for the Standing Rock Sioux Nation. The pipeline could also potentially destroy sacred sites belonging to the Sioux Nation.

The Federal Government has ignored their duty under the National Historic Preservation Active to consult with the Standing Rock Sioux before approving the pipeline.

Activists from all over North America have been protesting this project and have been the subject of violence via water cannons, rubber bullets and chemical attacks from police, who are acting as militarized unit for Energy Transfer Partners.

Some articles with video from the protest:

However, the Sioux Nation will be getting support from an surprising ally.

A story I heard on NPR a month or two back revealed the Gov't did, indeed, try to consult with the Standing Rock Sioux during the planning and the leader(s) of the tribe ignored all requests for meetings.

I wonder if anybody following this realizes that it's really just an offshoot from a bigger, uglier problem, which is nationwide permit 12.

From what I understand, the city of Bismarck was the original point where the pipeline was to cross the Missouri Rover. Bismarck was worried about the pipeline contaminating it's municipal water supply.

McP and his silly "look at the bigger picture to see this ain't an isolated problem" perspective.

Being that this particular event is a multi-layered socioeconomic and human rights issue, which includes the permit 12 federal overreach problem, shouldn't we be praising these people for bringing awareness to an issue that previously had almost none?

Maybe. It reeks of "activist tourism".

I don't think it applies here. Several factors are not ideal for fair weather activists: in North Dakota, freezing temps, lack of modern amenities, dangerous police presence, low media coverage. There doesn't seem to be a lot of good reasons for the average joe to stop life and drive up there.

Cynicism aside, it's nice to see the good guys play fair and win.

Now that this is over, everyone goes back to not caring about all the other leaky pipelines.

If anything, it created more awareness for leaky pipes everywhere. It's not like major media reports on every busted oil pipe or contaminated water source.

Hopefully the awareness sticks and we start to change overall. That being said, we can't really get to Mars using solar or wind.

Has anyone considered that maybe the Standing Rock Sioux will not protest the pipeline after this because they're ballers at negotiating their cut?
