I only bought one album of new music this year and it was Tedeschi Trucks Band - Let Me Get By. Great album. Going to see them again in January.

Agreed, though I think I'm in the minority on thinking it was a very strong year for movies as well.

What were some good, fresh-sounding rock albums that came out this year? Great year for jazz, hip-hop, singer-songwritery stuff, etc., but most of the critically lauded "indie rock" records left me pretty cold (Parquet Courts, Car Seat Headrest, etc. -- blech).

Well, Goodness by The Hotelier is my recommendation, but I also like Car Seat Headrest a lot

Yeah, I don't really feel solid in my picks until a few months into the following year -- I usually play a lot of catch-up at Christmas.

A friend and I have made top ten lists each of the last 10-15 years... We solidify our top ten before the end of January, and then we can have as many honorable mentions as we want, which aren't ranked higher or lower than each other, but just to have a complete list of the albums we enjoyed while in that year. Once past ten, I find it rather difficult to rank albums. Also, there's a separate list altogether for albums missed or discovered at a later date.

That being said, here's my current top 5:

1. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
2. Bowie - Blackstar
3. School of Seven Bells - SVIIB
4. The Claypool Lennon Delirium - The Monolith of Phobos
5. The Kills - Ash & Ice

This most likely will not change, but 6-10 are still a bit up in the air. I know RNDM will get ranked, but it won't crack the top 5, for sure.
