I've been trying to make headway in "Hillbilly Elegy" for almost three months now and am still stuck around page 50. I don't get the hype, this book fuckin suuuuckkkks.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I'm up to Born in the USA, which is about halfway. Really enjoyable, very easy to read. I never knew that much about him in the first place, so all the "revelations" that he brings up are totally new to me. I'm very much liking it.

The United Arab States declares a War on Terror. Arabian and Persian troops invade the Eastern Seaboard and establish a Green Zone in Washington, D.C. . . .

Summer, 2009: Arab Homeland Security agent Mustafa al Baghdadi interrogates a captured suicide bomber. The prisoner claims that the world they are living in is a mirage--in the real world, America is a superpower, and the Arab states are just a collection of "backward third-world countries." Man I can't wait to start this one. Lovecraft Country was brilliant and I have very high hopes for this.

Still trying to work my way through Muddle Earth by John Brunner. I've set it down a couple of times to come back to it later, and now I'm far enough in that I don't want leave it unfinished. I like Hitchhiker's Guide and the Christopher Moore books that I've read, but it seems like any other humorous, absurd science fiction I try manages to have no coherent story in an attempt to be as bizarre as possible. I think this one might be finally settling down on that score, though.

I really hate it when I start noticing this. For example, in writing you put things in groups of three. I hate it when numbers 1 and 2 are perfectly normal for an observation and then number three is wild and wacky, like an obvious "look at this, isn't it wild and wacky?" ploy. It's lazy. If it were more subtle I'd definitely appreciate it more.
