2016 Sucks; Can We Skip to 2017? (The Albums of 2017 Thread)

2016 was kind of a crapfest year, though it wasn't terrible insofar as new music. That said, it sounds like 2017 is primed to blow it out of the water, so this is the thread to post in for a catch-all about new stuff in the upcoming year.

After a purposefully slow year in 2016, Constellation Records are starting 2017 off right with the sophomore album from Avec le Soleil Sortant de sa Bouche, called Pas pire pop [I ❤ You So Much]. Three new tunes, a bit unfortunately split across ten tracks (hooray streaming royalties ), here's part two of "Alizé et Margaret D. Midi moins le quart. Sur la plage, un palmier ensanglanté":

Toronto mainstay Ryan Driver is working on his third album of original songs and it's to be titled Careless Thoughts. It should be out some time early in the year.

Do Make Say Think have finally mastered their new album and submitted it to Constellation, so we should get it this year. Justin Small played an outtake and an early mix album cut on his defunct radio show, and it sounds like it's going to be quite good.

The Draperies convened in the summer for their once-a-year live outing in Toronto, and this time the two-show event was intended as a recording session for their third album. I don't know for sure that it will be out next year, but I'm crossing my fingers.

Supposedly Shalabi Effect have a new album in the can, but they've mostly disappeared from the internet for a while, so who knows what's up with that.

Mogwai are working on new stuff right now, and Grails just mastered their new album. More info will probably appear in the next several months.

Dead Man Winter (Dave Simonett of Trampled By Turtles) has a new album coming out in January, for fans of dark, wintery, upper midwestern alt-country.

Tim Darcy, the frontman for Ought, is releasing his first solo album in February for Jagjaguwar, called Saturday Night. First single is "Tall Glass of Water":



I like Ought plenty; not really sure how I feel about this. I'm sure I'll probably check it out once the whole thing's released, to see if the rest of the album's better.

I heard the worst reporting on NPR yesterday about some British band called Jagawartha, or something like that. The reporter and the and kept talking about their fresh and unique sound, then they'd play a clip. Every single song sounded exactly like Primal Scream.

Wait, NPRs reporting was bad because you didn't agree with their music reviewer?

Gave those Jagwar Ma clips a listen, and I think I understand why NPR was harping about them being "fresh." If you've spent the last couple years championing that stomp-along folk-pop stuff like Mumford & Sons and Of Monsters and Men, then something like this would seem "new," even if it would have been all the rage in 2010.

Toronto artists Khôra (Matthew Ramolo) and Mas Aya (Brandon Valdivia) began working on collaborative material last year, both live and in studio. This has resulted in Tangled Roots, released on January 1, and a collection of material cut from those sessions, Disjecta, out the same day.

All I have so far is Run the Jewels 3 and the new Flaming Lips.

Nightmare Logic from the band Power Trip sounds promising though.
