There was just this strain of pop music where people sounded too cool to care or something. It's what I listened to back in the day, but now it does nothing for me. Maybe it will kick in for me if I listen a bit more.

I never liked any of those bands except for Garbage, who never struck me as particularly sarcastic. A little icy maybe

I do like this Semisonic song

(keep an eye out for young Paul Rudd)

That's the thing about the 80s: They were too dumb to know how stupid the music sounded, so they gave it their all.

The 90s by comparison sounds so self conscious and repressed.

I'm cherry picking a bit of course. There were some heart-on-their-sleeve types around.

It's just kinda weird that I was listening to the Gin Blossoms and thinking that they seem to put more heart and soul into their music than a lot of the "real" bands at the time.

I probably just need a nap.

The problem with the Gin Blossoms is that their only good songwriter killed himself right after they became successful.

this is a good example:
I hated this song so much. I don't know that there's any musical era from my life that I remember less fondly than the late '90's. It was a terrible time to be a rock fan unaware that the radio wasn't the only place to find it.

I kind of do admire the fact that that Placebo song is basically just one chord the whole way through

Inspired by the u2 thread...

When was the last time a band actually delivered on the promise to quickly release a follow-up to an album? MMJ said they would after the Waterfall and didn't, U2 of course, Pearl Jam and their infamous EPs...

I can only think of Drive-By Truckers with "The Big To-Do" and "Go-Go Boots" (11 mo. apart).

Kendrick's was a sort of "outtakes and leftovers" job too, good as that album is.

The Wilco example is a good one, as is Beach House's "Depression Cherry" and "Thank Your Lucky Stars."
